Yeah I know this is a chess site but I am a decent to above average league bowler. I carry about 185 average. I've bowled since I was about six years old and I am considering trying for the amatuer tour. Anybody else have an interest in talking about this? I'm sure I will get plagued with the guys who like to drink beer and are not very good.

Even when they are 3 lanes over, you need to keep an eye out. It was my turn, I look around... and everyone is either looking at that guy, or looking at me wondering why the heck I'm standing up with my ball while that guy has 10 or 11 strikes.
Ooops. That only happened a couple times.

Its very very cool to watch, especially if the guy nails all 12 strikes and deserves them. Yeah its a known, unsaid, rule to back off the guy who is rolling it. I've seen one 299 thrown too...bummer π

Originally posted by Joe FistOk I was too lazy to read the whole post, but hey, I bowl in a league too! I mean ok, my average is like 120 in the league, but I usually play about a 135-average... it's just that I screw up in the league dunno why. But anyway, this is only my second year of league bowling, plus I'm a girl and only 16... so what the heck. If you're considering going on that tour, I'd say go for it... if the entrance fee isn't too high (unless you're sure you'll win).

Dunno how it is with you, but I seem to do better under pressure... I came in 6th last year in the big annual european pepsi-cola YABA tourney.. handicap division, of course π
Where are you from?
Angie π
PS: Waaaah I was supposed to bowl in a tourney today, and they cancelled it because of a snowstorm :'(
And oh yeah, my league has it's standings online: http://www.leaguesecretary.com/Includes/Reports/LeagueFiles.asp?SiteID=&LeagueID=10578
it's usually updated on fridays or saturdays. My team is the 5-pin fanatics... anyone get the joke or is it a local thing?
Originally posted by RBHILLI actually know two people who did it. One is one of my best friends, and he's done it several times (YESTERDAY!!!). I saw it once, it was awesome. Hehe the guy says I bring him luck... he actually carries a picture of me around in his bowling bags (not kidding). I also saw a guy from my league (yay he's in my team now π) bowl 299... and he's only 15.

Highest I ever bowled was 188 π³ Actually, no, it was 202... in 8-pin no tap π

I'm from Southern California and I am guessing the 5-pin thing, at least to me, means if you don't hook (put a spin) on the ball and you still hit your strike shot but leave the 5 pin. When people throw the ball straight, even though they may think they hit their strikeshot and sometimes it will strike, many times they will leave a 5 pin or split because the ball doesn't have any revolutions on it.
Originally posted by Joe Fistwell, actually, that 5-pin thing has a different meaning:

The saying goes, that whenever you miss the 5-pin on the second ball, you won't have sex for 6 months... and guess which pin I always miss? You were right with the cause for leaving the 5-pin on the first ball (I throw fingertip, and the only time I ever strike is when hitting brooklyn... if I hit the strike side, there is always at least one pin left). Somehow, the five pin is hardest for me to hit. I don't know why, it's not logical, I'm right handed and my ball curves to the left, but I even get the 10-pin more often!
Maybe it's a sign from above...

If I may offer some advice, if you have a fingertip make sure you stay behind the ball when releasing and don't come around the side. At the point of release, make sure it comes off your fingertips last.
Usually to pick up the 5 pin on the second shot (if you are a rightie like me), I usually move 1-2 boards to my left from where I stand for my strike shot. People often think the 5 pin shot is the same as their strike shot because its in the center but its not because the 5 pin is farther back. π
I've got a feeling she's using a normal house ball....
I used to shoot a house ball, and the highest I ever got was a 176. A friend had a fingertip that fit me well, and I shot a 184 with it. I had to get my own at that point!
As for the 5 pin... no sex for the evening... not 6 months!?!??! Man, that would be nuts!

My biggest problem is that I tend to bowl around my hips, meaning my ball hits the lane much farther to the right than I think it will... not a good condition for hitting my mark π³
But hey, I'm having fun, so let's forget the rest π

So where around the house, I have a 5 finger holed Grey Ghost. Fun to bowl with but I am totally useless with it.
Originally posted by PhlabibitHmmm... I've hit my right leg several times, from the knee upwards. I have fallen onto the lanes on several occasions... although that was when I was still using house shoes.

And my toenail is still blue... because I opened my locker, and my little sister's 11-pound bowling ball dropped onto my foot from a hight of about 5 feet... ouch. wasn't broken though... lucky.
