personally, i was never that interested in the "present-time" plot.
having a plane crash on a mystery island with no possibility of contact from the outside world was for me a perfect premise for the flashbacks which featured heavily in the first few series of Lost.
The flashbacks to people's lives before the crash were generally done very well, were consistent as to characterisation, and left you (the viewer) in the privileged position of knowing lots of back-story about each character which they do not know about each other, but which colours their interaction on the island.
I thought the first two seasons in particular were ace, despite the ludicrous "plot".

Despite protestations of people all over the world who are not clever enough for their own good by a long shot, but would very much love others to think that they are that clever, "profit" is actually the only word in the entire shambles which matters.
Typical Hollywood con. And if you're still wondering, but what was the point of it all...? What did it all mean, really...? Guess what: you've fallen for the con.
Getting idiots to watch an idiot plot, and believe that it isn't an idiot plot, really, honest guv', cross my heart and hope not to make a massive profit from the advertising revenue - that's the entire point.

I started giving it some interest out of necessity, in that my house mate watched it religiously. It got to a point where I watched three episodes and it had gone back to where I started. I mean I could have bought any film and randomly rewinded and fast forwarded it couldn't I?
I gave up after series 1, drawing the conclusion that it was about f*** all.
I think they should have called it: -
'LOST?'
