I had chickens for many years. If you feed them cement they lay hard boiled eggs.
Don't buy chicks. Buy 6 month old pullets that are ready to lay eggs.
You'll need a small shed for them to roost in at night. They like to be up off the ground. You'll need nesting boxes for them to lay their eggs. They have a pecking order and won't want to be too close or you'll have dead hens.
GRANNY.

I've been thinking of owning a few chickens for years. I have read about 6 books, spent hours online and gawked at chicks with my kids at the feed stores around here for 4 years straight. I have no idea why I am so partial to chickens. I love the idea of having a chicken coop, chickens to name, and fresh eggs. I love building things, too.
Is that weird? Who owns chickens? π CONFESS!!!!

I own chickens and I'm proud! π
We have around 40 at the moment. We've also just been involved in rescuing and rehoming near 1000 ex-laying hens from a commercial farm that could no longer afford to feed them and would otherwise have had them killed.
I can honestly say the ex-battery/ex-laying hens are the best ones we've owned. Far more friendly and interactive than the 'fancy' breeds we've had before. I can't walk outside without being surrounding by the inquisitive little things! They're so friendly. And getting your own fresh eggs is the best way. We also sell ours locally now that we get so many, which covers the hens' upkeep costs, so they pay for themselves.

I would love to have some myself but do not want the responsibility/work that comes with owning pets...
