KETTERING–Police in Ohio say a woman has been charged with child endangering after another motorist reported she was both breastfeeding a youngster and talking on a phone while driving.

Police in the Dayton suburb of Kettering say the caller told them he saw the woman Thursday.

Officer Michael Burke says authorities used a license plate number to track down 39-year-old Genine Compton.

He said the woman told officers she was breastfeeding and wouldn't let her child go hungry.

Burke said the legal concern is that Compton had a child in her lap while driving, not that she was breastfeeding in public.

He said the child was under two years old.

Police say the woman faces up to 180 days in jail and a $1,800 fine if convicted.

So I know this is a politically incorrect point, but I have to tell you, I think it is a little bit of an over reaction. For years, as a kid, my folks trucked us around in the bed of their pick up truck. There were no baby seats, those have only existed for maybe 35 years or so. Before that time, it was perfectly acceptable for someone to hold a baby while riding in a car, or even, GASP, while driving. I know, we don't do it today because we know better, and statistics show that if you're chatting it up on a cell phone you are more likely to cause an accident than if you are paying attention to the road with no distractions.

My point is that if you are going to look for crazy American Women examples, I bet there are lots of them out there crazier than this.

I'm not saying she was right to do it. I'm just saying it doesn't seem THAT crazy to me, personally.

You are just jelous that she has a car!

Anyway, people should mind their own business...who gives a crap if she is driving with a baby in her lap...it's none of your business.

I mind. I didn't spend years working my ass off designing seat belts and air-bags for people to not use them correctly, or not use them at all.

Do you know the inertia generated by a baby at just 15Km/h?

It is frightening to watch a body impact test at just that minor speed. The noise is worse than thunder and lightening, and the devastation at just 15Km/h is enough for a child's body to bend metal seat frames.

If she had crashed that child had no chance. Either the airbag would have killed it (cos she was so dumb to do what she was doing I doubt she had the intelligence to switch them off with the baby in the front!) or she would have killed it by crushing it against the instrument panel (cos I also bet she wasn't wearing a belt - she was breast feeding remember!)

Airbags (as yet) don't have sensors that detect distance to occupant. The baby's neck would have been broken, or at worst its head would have been blown off.

I mind.... I really do. It is totally irresponsible to put a child in a car unrestrained. And what's more - there are laws against what she was doing with a 2 year old in the driver's seat with the car being mobile - they should impose them and forget about the fact that she had her breast out! 😠

That is great that you design seat belts and air bags, they certainly are useful. That still does not mean it is any of your business or anyone else's business if people wear seat belts or not. The police care because it is their job to uphold the law, if it is a law in that state.
You can't make or require people make wise decisions it is ultimately their own choice.

No I CAN'T. I also don't want that responsibility either. It is none of my business, as you say, and none of my expertise. My expertise is in what is put there in the car for use.

But I will still say it is completely IRRESPONSIBLE for any parent to put a child in a car unrestrained. The test results and crash results for the last 30 years speak for themselves, in that it is madness not to wear belts or restrain a child. 😉

There's nothing to detect a baby sitting in someone's lap, but there are sensors built into the seat tracks that tell the airbag system how close the seats are to the dash. The system will then adjust how the airbag is deployed. There are also weight sensors in the passenger seat. If a child less than 60 pounds is sitting in the front seat then the airbag system will automatically shut off the passenger side airbag. I don't think people realize how powerful airbags are when they deploy. I once buried an airbag two feet under the ground and deployed it. It went off like a land mine shooting dirt 30 feet into the air. That was almost as fun as when we set off an airbag inside of a co-worker's filing cabinet. The poor cabinet didn't stand a chance. We were able to piece it back together so that it looked okay from the outside but when he tried to open it the next day it fell apart. We never did tell him what happened.

But when a person's foolish decision endangers another, especially another whose well being is totally dependent on that person, then yes, you can require that he or she do the right thing.
