Dr Rational likes Hymns because the vowel (Y) is followed by three consonants.

Isn't an Y always followed by a consonant?

Y can be both vowel and consonant, e.g. 'yield'.

In Dr Rational's example, 'y' was followed by three consonants but I don't know if that's the right answer.

"The letter Y stands for a consonant in "yoke" but for a vowel in "myth." The answer to the question is that Y is the only letter commonly used as both vowel and consonant in English..."

Point for lolof. Good work!

Note: "crypts, rhythm and myths" contain y used as a vowel

Simply a hint with the hope that you would solve the puzzle. Maybe Dr. Rational's next puzzle will involve phallic symbols.
