I noticed right after the lockdowns (covid and those seem like a nightmare now) that many people’s driving ability suddenly seemed to decline, and it’s getting worse I think. People drive like idiots in the UK. The road conditions are not good with potholes all over the place, except motorways and even then there are some.

I had been thinking about taking up motorcycling again but have kicked the idea into touch as it’s just too dangerous now. The population has exploded in the last 4 years as has the number of vehicles on the roads and there seems to be serious traffic collisions daily in the region where I live.

I've noticed what I can only call 'brain fog' which has made people dumber including myself.
Also, less patience in everything, including transportation.

Driving conditions are worse everywhere since Covid. All our major roads have sprouted "temporary" speed limit signs because there's no money for road maintenance and millions of people are on the move after the ferocious lockdowns. Brain fog is definitely involved too. The authorities here can't decide whether it's caused by lockdown frustration or long covid.

But how long has it been since lockdowns?

Traffic has pretty much rebounded to the busy levels it was before covid (in the US anyways). Only now, most people drive like great-grandmas.

I actually liked driving to work during covid because hardly anyone was on the roads.

No - The traffic situation in the Seattle area has improved since covid, now that more of us (me included) work from home. Still some rush hour backups of course, but generally good. Also - we pay more in highway tax's here than most states, so the roads are maintained pretty well.

Halifax Population Growth
From July 1, 2022, to July 1, 2023, Halifax's population grew by over 19,000 people – a new record and a record-high growth rate of 4.1%. I know there are even more people now, Traffic is terrible and many don't seem to know the rules of the road when driving. We have been swamped with immigrants, and it appears majority of them have vehicles. Our housing situation is terrible, we have people living in tents all over the place. Our Mayor is stepping down and there are at least a dozen councilors going after his job, I'd throw my hat in, but I am getting too old for it now. Besides it is cut throat thankless job to have. I'd sooner continue helping out the less fortunate.

The fact that there are idiots on the roads in Sweden has nothing to do with covid - we didn't practice lock-downs, there is simply a lack of respect.

And that's what it's all about: when you cheat, steal, betray, abuse, or even kill somebody - respect other beings, other people's property, other people's dignity and rights - RESPECT!

@divegeester

I don’t relate it to Covid and see it more to do with people affording nippy new cars or flashy SUV’s which they renew by lease every 3 years. They’re busy people who are easily frustrated by retirees like myself who don’t need to rush anywhere. They prefer driving as close as they can to overtaking for some reason? Must admit my driving isn’t as sharp as it was as I only drive a few miles per week but I’ve not hit a car in 40 years which was just after I passed my test.

Since lockdown my driving ability is awful, just awful.

Worth noting, I've never held a licence.
