1) Crime rate must be low, the lower the better
2) Should be good job prospects for me (IT, website, admin etc.)
3) Live music scene should be good
4) Housing prices not too high
5) Preferably English speaking, but not necessarily as a first language
6) My girlfriend is a teacher, there should be good job prospects for her too, though not essential
So, that's about it, over to you.
2) Lots of IT work.
3) Lots of live music, unfortunately mostly crap Afrikaans and cover bands. I'm going to a big music festival next month, which has been going for 11 years now. If you know where to go the music scene is OK.
4) House prices are skyrocketing. You have to sell your soul to the devil twice to buy a place.
5) We have 11 bloody official languages, probably a world record. Most people understand and can speak English though...
6) If she can get into a private school, that's the only way she's going to make money.
On the upside, we have probably the hottest woman in the world (you probably don't care about this) and with a foreign accent you can always score!
We have great weather which means all the hot woman walk around in skimpy clothes.
We have the big 5.

Unless you live in Cape Town, the crime rate isn't as bad, or at least statistically you're a lot less likely to be hijacked than in Jo'burg.

Yes.

Is it Oppikoppi already? I've never been. The band scene has been utter bull for the last five years... though I saw a flyer this morning that Lithium played in Stellenbosch on 2 July. It's been a LONG time.
4) House prices are skyrocketing. You have to sell your soul to the devil twice to buy a place.
House prices are on the rise because the interest rate has been dropping, though it's still way higher than what you'd expect in the U.K, the U.S.A. or Canada.
5) We have 11 bloody official languages, probably a world record. Most people understand and can speak English though...
We're a bona-fide culture collage, though the English language is indeed disgraced on an almost country-wide level.
6) If she can get into a private school, that's the only way she's going to make money.
DO NOT MOVE TO SOUTH AFRICA IF YOU WANT TO BE A TEACHER HERE.
So far:
Canada is highest on my list, can I hear more about the various differing places?
Japan has it's good points, though I'm not sure I could afford it and they don't play cricket.
South Africa is too damn hot and I'm not sure I can handle having to live behind high security fencing...
Turkey, definitely too hot.
Iceland, too expensive, but if I could afford it I would definitly consider it, though again, no cricket.
China, too many civil rights issues
India, too hot, too crowded, too religious.
House prices are fine if you coming from england a decent house will cost around 50,000 - 60,000 pounds buying outright....
Jo`burgs weather is better than CT (rains to much, too much wind), we have constant sunshine (thats the big firey ball in the sky that the english never see), besides you coming from England!
Agreed about the School! No teacher would voluntarily come here from overseas, least if they know whats good for them.
Live music does kinda suck, tho occasionally you do find a band worth listening too. All depends on what music you like.
The music festivals are nothing compared to england where the bands are much better but we all have a pretty good time, cars are burnt people get rushed to hospitals, fights break out, music, sex, drugs and lots of alcohol, pretty much like everywhere else.
so think about it!!

Yup, Oppikoppi 5-7 August I think... If you can, you should make a plan to come, it's good fun!
With only about 15000 people it's nothing like Glastonbury or Reading, but there's only (mostly) local bands - that's what the festival is about - celebrating SA music.

There are only retired criminals there so the crime-rate is low, most musicians end up going there one way or the other, the lodging is free, lots of English speakers, hot weather all year round...
The place? Hell.

I would suggest Bulgaria, the most beautiful women in the world, friendly people, decent food, beach in the summer and skying in the winter and everything is very cheap. I was there two years and almost never ate at home, unless I had guests.
They also have lots of IT research centers and they are among the best hackers in the world (Trojan horses, anyone?).
Anyway, just my €0.02.
