The rules are mostly very straight forward, the tricky one which you will need to understand somewhat in order to comprehend the gameplay, is the “offside rule”.

TLDR version: the goal scorer must not, in any part, be ahead of the last defender when the ball is passed to him/her. You’ll find the VAR on this hilarious because it’s deep visual science measuring down to the last inch!
All the other contentious rules are around fouls and free kicks. Other than that it’s all about pass and move speed and creativity to find space.

From what I make of it the off side isn't similar to hockey it is if the forward is behind the defender? In hockey the linesmen would call the off side and they often make mistakes on that one.
Also they don't wear any protective gear that I can see like hockey players. Then of course there isn't a little round rubber puck going over 100 miles per hour at them either. I've seen some pretty hard collusions between players where they appear to be running pretty fast, that has to hurt with no gear!
