When I was young (I'm 49 now) i.e. from about 10 to 15 years old we used to play football for hours in the nearby fields or as near as possible to a field, it was a nuisance to have to go in to eat my tea (I'm a northerner that's what I/we called dinner then) then I would be straight out playing again, and I was hopeless at football compared to say the sch ...[text shortened]... the streets anymore abvioulsy but I still jog3 times a week and ditto cycling with my dog.
they ought to add a physical fitness section to the SAT tests.

Jeez, that's what America's known for...about 64% of the US adult population is overweight...according to recent studies...thankfully, I am in good health and not overweight in any way...
It's simple really - although there are exceptions. You eat too much, you get fat. You eat too much of the wrong things (animal fats, sugar etc), you get more fat.
The same Time has an article by a journo about getting a pool. He bemoans the cost which includes a motorised cover. Huh? That's just lazy and unnecessary. Like buying a bread kneader. Pushing buttons doesn't burn calories.

how do u suppose this cycle is stopped and reversed? otherwise we will all die from a heart attack
Spend Saturdays hiking once in a while.
Ride a bike if you have the time instead of driving.
Help people carry stuff, dig, or do other work.
Sprint, hop up on ledges, jump over puddles spontaneously.
Take the stairs.
Etc.
This helps keep money from going into the hands of terrorists when you don't buy gas anyway.

I don’t worry about it. All Grandpa ever ate was salt pork, drank a case a beer a day, smoked cigarettes and a pipe, married a 65 year old woman at 95 and died at 96. Daddy didn’t do any of those things and only lived to 84.
Really, I think there's more to it than just the ignorance of posters like this ;-)
Our modern-consumerism lifestyle is so counter to anything remotely healthy from either a physical or emotional standpoint, and due to lobbyists there is no legislation around just how far pharmaceuticals and food industries can push the limits.
Let's see...
Credit Cards are being marketed to High School students.
McDonald's is marketed towards 3-8 year olds.
Doctors are courted to act as drug dealers to children for many amazingly addictive chemicals.
Adjustable Rate Mortgage loans are extended to families so they can buy houses far outside their income level only to face foreclosure and bankruptcy in 5 years.
Facts are facts. An economic system build only on the virtue of making more money is insanity. Welcome to the modern corporation.
