avg is and has been removed from my computer since this morning. pretty sure it's not an FF issue. restarted my computer a while ago and it automatically shut down just as it reached my screen-saver...

How far can you take this?
That would be comparable to understanding the code, not the how and why it works.

Try to get at least a browser working (Chrome or IE) properly. Then you might try online scans like F-Secure or similar.

Isn't it mostly taken for granted, when we buy things, that experts have wittingly put great effort into their work for us to ensure we get an all-round good product?

Or shall we all buy kit-cars, and build them ourselves, ensuring each bit there is the best?

I believe it is a fair comparison. Correct me if I am wrong.

You are wrong.

The quality of the product is not the issue here. Learning to use said product properly is the problem.

You say you don't have the time to read up on free security software, so you buy a suite. I'm saying you should, and not just trust advertising blurbs.
Even if you decide that the suite is best suited to your needs - as it may well be, do you at least make sure to randomly scan with other products and make sure your product is updating itself. Do you backup regularly and make sure all your other applications ar up top date, as well as your operating system?

Are you getting random restarts and shutdowns of the OS now? This can be a bunch of hardware problems.

They do it themselves!

I have AdvancedSO, CheckPCerrors (ARO) blah blah etc running.

ARO called my pc to say Kasp was out of date, when I logged in first time after vacation. Kask was still updating.

Isn't that enuff? I haven't time to be a computer boffin. Most people on the internet haven't!! Are my tracks totally off track?

I'm not taking the pee here, I asking as a general user.

Bad RAM or just a bad connection, CPU dying, overheating. Has the box been moved?

Better to make sure it's not the Windows updates first. What OS are you using?
You said you can't System Restore past yesterday? Can you get to sometime last week?

There were no MS updates released yesterday. Do you have any idea what was updated?
Open Add/Remove Programs and check "Show Updates" and see if you can find the an update installed this week.

Otherwise, I'm pretty stumped for now.

That's right, the last Patch Tuesday was 8 December, next one should only be next week. That's why I want to know what you updated.

In XP - Start, Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs, Add/Remove Windows Components and bring IE back from the dead.
