Half the NI are "English", then.

Mass migration of English families to the Province many years ago has left roughly a 50/50 split of Irish and English (or they were English 150 years ago).

I think you'll find most of the migrants to Ulster were Scots.

I'm not sure "most" is correct, although I concede there was a large number of them.

The English Protestants were too well off to want to migrate to Ulster in large numbers.
This is why the modern-day Ulster loyalist/protestants consider Lowland Scots to be 'their' language, as the nationalists view Irish as theirs.

In any event, there's nothing like a 50/50 Irish/English split in northern ireland.

It'll be interesting to see the representation in the UK team for the 2012 Olympics.

If it were now there'd only be Giggs in with a chance of replacing any of the England first XI.
Hee hee...

Very funny! Give the hated sasanach hell, my Gaelic brother!

(Only joking, Saxon chums, you're not all bad! Indeed I'll be supporting you tonight- I can understand Scotland and Wales competing seperately, althouh part of the "United" Kingdom, but Northern Ireland? What the hell is that all about?

Is it a country? -No.

Is it a state? -No.

Is it a nation without a proper state, like our scotch friends (long live the SNP, by the by!) -No.

Is it a principality, like our P- Celt friends in Wales? -No.

Is it a province, like Ulster? -No. (it's about half of Ulster, to be specific)

Of course, for this mess, the Angle is largely to blame, but still... what a mess!

So what on earth is it? Less than a province (oh the shame!), and it has a team, which only half of the footballers up there want to play for!?

I know this would comment would be more at home in a spirituality forum, but:

What kind of a God would allow that?!?

Still... thinking about this again, and given all that, it would be funny if they won. (The mockery would hark back to the days of San Marino's classic goal a few years back, etc. Good old San Marino, Northern Ireland's rather less ridiculous cousin!)

ahh... Bless their cotton socks!😀

It was a mix between poor English prods from the north, and Scotch prods from the Lowlands.

By the by, Lowland Scots/scotch is a maky-upy by a low-brow people! It's just the illiterate speel of their forefathers trying to speak the Queen's tongue. Not to knock the remarkable culture found in certain sectarian circles, one understands. A fascinating people, truly fascinating.

They should really give up this sectarianism, and go and watch their Catholic neighbours playing Gaelic. it's the only chance they stand of seeing footballing silverware.

A side note: you can be from almost anywhere throughout Europe and be a Celt, or be born anywhere in Ireland to be Irish. I do believe the Protestants in the north would resent being referred to as either, preferring to trace links back to Germanic peoples from across the pond, and do indeed insist on being "Bratish". A charming accent. Truly charming.

I'm off to put on my cassette of Ian Paisley reading Shakespeare's sonnets. I recommend it to all, and enjoy the football!

Whatever the percentage of Celts in the Northern Ireland team, they've done the business!

And no doubt, you got more satisfaction from England losing, than from Scotland winning. Nay bother.
