I agree that there have been other incidents of genocide in history, and undoubtedly there will be many more.
However, there has never before, nor since, been any kind of mass murder which was organised to such an extent as the Holocaust in the late 30s and 40s.
It is not just Germany that needs to remember the Holocaust. The whole of Europe, with the exception of Denmark, didn't mind one bit handing over their Jews to the Nazis. Even the british handed over a few when Jersey and Guernsey fell. The rest of the world is no better, restricting the number of jewish refugees allowed to immigrate, or closing borders completely.
Holocaust Day is not just remembering murdered jews, it is about brutality and the failings of the whole world.
It sucks that Israel and Palestinians can't live in peace, but to compare what the israelis are doing to anything approaching the Holocaust just shows how rampant anti-semitism still is nowadays. Sickening!
Originally posted by knightwestIt is noteworthy though, that besides Denmark, Italy lost the fewest Jews of all countries involved (in Europe).

And they were Germany's allies!

Back in the days during WW2, U.S.Navy Corpsmen (medics) and U.S. Coast Guard medics were showered with many nicknames, all in humorous jest and respect for the medics and none taken too offensively, (well, maybe some medics were offended, but they had no sense of humour), as these brave medics saved thousands of U.S. Marine, Navy, and Coast Guard lives both on land and at sea. Since my specialty in my field is preventive medicine, I counsel, and sometimes treat medicinally, young men and women in my service who come down with a sexually transmitted disease (STD). I get to ask all the pertinent questions about who slept with whom, when, what type of sex was involved, etc...and have to arrange for contacting the person(s) involved with my patients....all in strict confidence mandated by law. Since I have great respect for my fellow Corpsmen (and now womwn too), especially battle-tested ones, I chose this moniker. Chancre-mechanic: Syphilis fixer-upper.....sort of like "Car-mechanic"......thanks for asking....and make sure you use condoms....😉
Chancre mechanic - I'm being a bit off here and I hope you don't mind because I'm gonna talk about your name. I hope you don't think it deflects from the particularly poignant and heartfelt statement that you made.
Isn't a chancre a syphilic genital sore that oozes pus and has treponema pallidum bugs moving about in it's yellow crater -and ...[text shortened]... t the right chancre. I hope you don't think this comment is a bit below the belt - so to speak.

They find it offensive for the same reason that a local school was chastised for turning a cross upside down during their production of "The Crucible" in order to symbolize the girls denouncing of their morals while falsly accusing others of witchcraft.
People are just looking to be offended. And it's annoying.

Please explain what that has to do with anything?
😕

The U.S. government were committing acts of genocide against Native Indians right up to the 70s. Compulsory, clandestine sterlisation of indian girls for example.
In East Timor, the u.s. supplied arms to the Suharto regime right up to the late 90s, even though half the indigen East Timorese population have been exterminated.
There was a brutal genocide in Cambodia after the Khmer Rouge came to power due to heavy american bombing of Cambodia, AFTER the end of the Vietnamese war.
Acts of genocide were carried out by the ozzies against Aborigines up till recently.
Rwanda is probably the latest genocide to have taken place.
As you might not know, Rwanda is in Africa, East Timor is in South East Asia, Cambodia is in Asia, Australia is in Australasia.
Now tell me again, why the "especially in europe" bit?

That will leave the weekend free for some serious contemplation of the brutality of man (and, yes, now women are being brutal too- it's only fair).
Hooray. What a wonderful world.
