Nah, he's laying there THINKING about her all night. If he could actually DO anything he'd be sound asleep within 15 minutes.

Edit: 18 yr-old having sex

1st time: 3 minutes
2nd time: 5 minutes
3rd time: 7-9 minutes

Then... total exhaustion and the best sleep ever!

Apparantly people who sleep 7 hours a night live longer than people who sleep 8+ hours a night (think i heard it in one of those random news stories somewhere).

Alcohol also prevents REM sleep, so having a nightcap may help you sometimes, if you have too much to get you to sleep, you will actually be worse off!

Interesting how statistics work.

Let's look at an example:
- You drove your car 12,000 miles last year.
- Your monthly car payment plus insurance was $400/month

How much did it cost you per mile to drive the car (excluding gas and/or repairs)?

Answer> $.40 cents a mile.

But if you had driven the car 25% less than that mileage, 8,000 miles, then the cost per mile for driving the car was $.60 cents a mile.

Since the price of gas is the same for each case, statistics would show that the more you drive your vehicle the less it will cost per mile!

I think that the reason statistics show people who get less sleep live longer is obvious. They are more active in their lives.

I suspect your natural sleeping rythm just is such. some people wake up early, but have hard time staying up late even if they had no reason to wake up early. some, like me, are just the opposite.

the rythm is developed during the first couple of years after you're born, and it's very very hard to change afterwards. -I tried waking up early & going to bed early throughout all of my school years up to high school. it never worked. I would just lie in the bed, tossing and turning 2-3 hours, and walk around half asleep until noon after I got up.

then, after high school I started painting all night, went to bed at 4-5 am, woke up 11-12 am. it was pure bliss, I was never tired, and I fell asleep within 5 minutes.

even now, I never go to bed before 3 am, usually 4-5 am, and wake up around 9-12 depending on what I have to do. I fall asleep in 1-3 minutes.

I tried the 'normal' rythm for 12 years, and it never worked. some of us just belong to the nightbreed I guess. (I have other stuff disturbing my sleep though, like the schizophrenic lady upstairs, screaming to imaginary people all through the night etc.)

I am like you in that respect. Not good if you have to start work at a normal time. πŸ™ For me, that means that I constantly get too little sleep during the week, and then I sleep a lot during the weekend. If it gets too bad during the week, I sometimes take a nap, which messes up my sleep pattern even more.

As you say, these sleep patterns are real and difficult or impossible to change. At university I attended a seminar about chronobiology and chronomedicine. Among other things we learned that research has shown that "morning people" (people who naturally go to bed and get up early) who worked night-shifts had a far higher risk to get health problems than other night-shift workers. They were unable to adapt to that rhythm.

yea, there's all kinds of crazy health problems you can get from night-shift if your body can't take it. increased cancer risk, lowered immune defense etc, which all translates to lowered life expectancy of course.

I wonder if there's similar results for 'night people' forcing themselves to the rythm of the 'morning people? -I've only seen studies focusing on night-shift workers...

With regards to what you say about the car, which car will last longer, however? Like cars, humans have only so much work they can take. yes, exercise helps prolong life, but too much can also shorten it.

I wonder if whoever did the survey tried to compare people who did similar amounts of exercise?

The older a person becomes the more value sleep has. For example, one of my friends was complaining to me that his wife keeps waking him up for sex...
