Originally posted by huntingbearI would very much like to become good at this game eventually, and as I have plenty of free time at the moment I try to put in some study time each day. It usually only amounts to ten minutes though, if that.
I might elaborate on my post about my chess seriousness. I play primarily for fun, but earnestly contend against each opponent and try to win[ ...[text shortened]... ! π Now, who's going to do one with equidistant letter skips? π
Still, being a good sport, and enjoying myself always come first. If I lose either of those I'll try my hand at lawn bowls instead.
Put me down as an 8.

Buggered if I know mate, why do you ask?
He's the cousin of my ex-gf, she met Orlando Bloom through him. Course I had never heard of him before she told me, but as he is an Australian actor, I thought that maybe in Oz he's somewhat of a celeb.
Originally posted by HentschelAh. Well I looked him up out of curiosity and I do recognise him. It seems he is fairly new to acting so his name hasn't got around down here yet.

You're right though, most aussies actors are very well known down here well before the rest of the world so much as glances at them. π

Sir, crazed is he who came in to eat and rejoice at, loudly crying "Lo! As if letters on here seem to be only for to make arithmeticπ."
Unless I slipped, they are equidistant. I only count letters.
By the way, I've tried composing equidistant skip codes in the past and never had success. My hat's off to you!
I really enjoy playing, and usually visit RHP a few times a day. as for how serious I am, I'm serious enough to try to learn and understand openings in MCO, but haven't yet bought any books on specific openings. I'd like to get more serious about chess when i have a little more time. My goal when i started here at RHP was to get to 1500. Still haven't done it, but i'm 1496 right now and looking good to win a game pretty soon.
I think i'm a 7 for seriousness, maybe just a six though...

How do I measure my level of seriousness? π³π
Do you own more than 10 chess books?
Do you have more than 10 games going on at this site?
Have you ever been told by a friend or family member that you play too much chess?
Have you ever made a serious study of rook and pawn endings?
Do you own Fritz/Chessbase?
Have you ever lost sleep over a difficult position or a loss?
Have you ever had a chess lesson with a professional teacher?
Have you ever played a serious tournament game?
Have you ever won a tournament game against a strong player (expert or above)?
Do you know who Ilyin-Genevsky was?
(What other questions should we ask?)
From what little I know of you, I'd guess at least an 8...!

I did study rook and pawn endings, but wouldn't say I did it very serious.I'm going to make a serious study soon though. So,in a little while I'll be an 8 π
Who was Ilyin-Genevsky?You got me curious π
Now all I have to do is lose some sleep and I'll be a ten! π
Originally posted by SirLoseALotI guess they spell it Ilyin-Zhenevsky now. Capablanca apparently hadn't heard of him either, until this game (pay particular attention around move 31):

He was a strong pre-WWII Russian master in Leningrad, a commisar, who is now considered one of the fathers of Soviet chess. There are lines in the Classical Dutch and Alekhine's defense that are named for him. He was killed during the war, I believe.
Everyone who reads this is one point more serious than they were!!!
