It was about 1995. My girlfriend went cross-country for a month and my father had signed me up for golf lessons. Spent the first several days learning how to put. My father asked how things were going.
I told him we are putting. He got all "What? You havn't got to hit a ball yet?".
So he showed me how to swing the club a couple times and put a ball out. I sucked, but about on the third or so try I smoked a ball out in the general direction I was aiming.
And that was the day my life changed! (for the better and poorer)
๐
best explanation of golf I ever read was a comic strip
first screen - guy messes up his shot. "I hate this game" he says.
second screen - guy messes up his shot. "I hate this game".
third screen - guy messes up his shot. "I hate this game".
fourth screen - he hits a blinder which sails 200 yards. "I LOVE this game".
That pretty well sums up golf for me.
I believe handicaps can go up to 28, making the total score 100 on a 72 par course. I usually hit around 120, but I've hardly played.

Usually someone will watch golf on the TV and say it's crap, until....
the first time that person hits a ball more than 250 yards down the center of the fairway, they're hooked.

Until I started playing more frequently.
Also Ernie Els and Retief Goosen are playing really well nowadays, and seeing as I'm from SA, I really enjoy watching them play.
Originally posted by UncleAdamI think it's a whole lot more interesting than baseball on tv.

Try this sometime: watch 1 hour of golf on tv and keep track of the number of times someone hits a ball, then do the same for baseball (including fouls, if you like).
Originally posted by richjohnsonyes in golf the ball is hit alot more than in basebal, but in golf the ball is sitting there say "Hit Me!"๐ and in Baseball the ball is saying "Just try and hit me....Sucker!"๐

Baseball has alot more action, as in hiting, catching, running, slideing......and of corse, Shirtless-Father and Son team that attacks players๐
Ah, golf brings back nostalgic memories of high school. For me and my friends, being on the golf team was all about getting out of school, staying up late playing poker, chasing cute girls around, finding someone old enough (and willing) to buy booze and the subsequent smuggling of the goods back into our hotel room.
Oh yeah, ocassionaly we had to play golf too. We never did too well. I wonder why that is? ๐

Golf has ruined my life.
Yes, it's true.
ruined.
my sanity is faltering as a result of this awful game.

But most of the smaller clubs, at least in SA don't really give a damn. When I play, I usually wear sneakers, normal socks, short pants and a golf shirt.
This makes the game more accessable to the average guy on the street and gives golf more exposure, which is a good thing...
