It was 6pm Belgian time on August 24th,2004 when I lit my (hopefully) last cigarette.I've decided to simply stop buying any.If I haven't got cigs,I can't smoke 'em,simple but effective strategy.
Wish me luck,I'm gonna need it! πŸ™‚

That's awesome news Sirlot! Hope you can keep it up. there is a conference at the hotel I work at tomorrow, a hypnosis seminar to quit smoking. It costs $50 but our company is paying $40 for anyone who wants to go. $10 is cheap to do something like that, I read that what they do is hypnotize you twice during the seminar and they guarantee you will leave at the end of it smoke-free or you get your money back.

Too bad there's no chance whatsoever that I would allow someone to hypnotize me, huh?πŸ™„

October 5th 2004 will be my first anniversary of stopping smoking. I didn't use any gimmicks, just went cold turkey. It's not easy, especially when I had a drink, but now, 11 months on, I just never think about it. I think I was lucky - the desire to smoke only lasted a few minutes at a time, and by the time the 5th day was over , I just didn't feel like it any more. Good luck, and if at first you don't succeed, try try again. Believe me, it's worth the effort.

November will be three years that I've been smoke free after a 30 year almost 3 pack a day habit. It will be tough Sir Lot, but hang in there, I'm rooting for you. The first 2-3 days are the toughest and then it all starts to get easier and easier. I still get the ocaisional urge, for some strange reason, but it passes as quickly as it comes on. You will feel much, much better, just watch you food consumption, because food is going to taste a lot better and drink lots of water.
Best wishes,
Charlie

I stopped smoking back in 1998. I also went cold turkey like Mat did. Charlie is right, the first three days are the worst, after that it is stroll in the park. Good luck Sir Smoke No More.

I remember when I was in primary school, almost 30 years ago, our teacher told us we'd soon be going to secondary school, and the peer pressure to do things like smoking, would be tremendous.

I was scared by that remark somewhat because I did not want to smoke, but I doubted I'd be strong enough to resist the peer pressure. It turned out to be a breeze. I think I've had to say no twice, and then my fellow-students knew that I wasn't going to fall for it. Needless to say I wasn't part of the cool gang, but at least I've never had to go through withdrawal. :-)

Maybe it helped that my mum once let me have a drag of her cigaret. I was 10 years old, I inhaled the smoke deeply... And got really, truly, disgustingly sick. I could feel the blood withdrawing from my face (actually, it felt as if the skin was falling off my skull, much like wallpaper comes off a wall when you don't use proper glue), and I decided to never do that again. And I haven't.

Good luck on all who are trying/succeeding to quit!

Congratulations to all you non-smokers! Hopefully, more people will post in this thread in the months to announce their decision to quit!

Good luck mate. You may notice a higher frequency of moves from yours truly in our games during your withdrawal period. Coincidence, of course.
