If all else fails, put it in neutral and get out and push.

Hahaha, I don't know how well that'd go over.

Pull the choke out, stick your handbag on it and hope for the best! And remember, when you are infront of a parked Roller, to gently move forwards - move the gear lever fully to the right and back towards yourself and let out the clutch.

Ah, thanks for the warning, yeah the gears are placed different if it's 5 or 6 gears (or more...god...) i.e.

5 gear:

135
24R

6 Gear (Usually):

R-135
246

Could be an issue thinking you're in reverse when you're really in 6th....
Some British cars have a different layout:

R 1 3 5
...2 4

I got pretty good with not stalling by the end, even if it started to sputter i was able to save it and keep it from stalling. The ...[text shortened]... utch is going to hit at different places - and the fact that I'll be nervous doesn't help.
do you need third gear for valet parking?

No, not at all - just an observation.

Quick question, do exmployees need to present their employers with their social security card or just a color copy of it?

Two things for you to think about. If you were worried about whether you were in R or 6th gear, it won't really be a secret to you. If you are truly in R, the car will roll backward as you hit the accelerater. However, if you were in top gear, the car would immediately stall. No car can run in top gear without patterning up through the lower gears. You could strat in second gear, or possibly 3rd gear on flat ground, but nothing higher.

The second thing for you to think about....Don't issue any challenges to the other valet attendants....you cannot win that one...at least not yet! Good luck.

I used to do that in High School. Fun job and you make a ton of money. Got to drive Ferraris, Rolls Royces...all kinds of cool cars.

One time though, these people came in with a pretty generic car. Later on, some other people came with the same car. Well, a couple hours after that, I ended up giving the wrong car to the wrong people. They actually drove away in it and were gone for about a half an hour. The real owners came out while they were gone and asked for their car. When I drove the other one up, they told me it wasn't theirs. Kind of a bad situation. The first people pulled back into the lot as I was busy explaining myself to the second group. Embarrassing, but it all worked out well in the end.

Careful. If he's driving elite cars, a lot of them have the power to pull away in top! The Vector of the 80's had 3 gears, but would pull from 0-237mph in top!....... many other top cars have the torque to pull away in top!

it's been a long time since i had to do that ... i just use my passport, instead. there is a list of acceptable documentation that employers are supposed to work from. it's on an official form. check google or wiki.

The trick is to put the car in gear, and very slowly let the clutch out (do not hit the gas) until you feel it "grab." You'll quickly get used to it that way. Or drive the car uphill, and practice holding the car in place with the clutch only. Don't do the second one in a car that you can't afford to replace the clutch. There are some cars where this is not possible - Porsche, Ferrari, Honda that some jackass put a racing clutch in, etc. Those you have to stall a lot or hope like hell you don't put it through a wall, until you get used to them.

In a 5 or 6 speed? I realize that it would be possible in some 3 speeds, but how would they ever overcome the torque from stand still with a 5 or 6 gear set up?

When you get the hang of a manual, there's no turning back 🙂.
