Except, of course, Capablanca.
"Rumor has it that a certain Bobby Fischer was once asked who the three best chess players of all times were. It may be just a legend, maybe not. But, again rumor has it, that the Chicago Monster's answer was: 'Capablanca, Fischer and Fischer.' "

The readers of Chess Informant rank them this way (apparently forgetting a guy named Bronstein):
- Fischer
- Kasparov
- Alekhine
- Capablanca
- Botvinnik
- Karpov
- Tal
- Lasker
- Anand
- Korchnoi

Fischer's estimated playing strength was about 3050 or so when he played in 1971 and 1972. Kasparov vs. Fischer in their prime should have a lot of draws. Kasparov would have a advantage as the Russians have been cheating for more than 40 years haveing a team of Grand Masters analyzeing the position of the adjourned games .

Does that mean Botvinnik is the best as he took Tal out for good.

My favorite resource on this is http://www.chessmetrics.com/. This guy goes to down with some fairly sophisticated statistical methods to determine who was the strongest chess player ever. Indeed, in one year peaks, Fisher comes in ahead of Kasparove.

But guess what, he's behind the chess machine, J. R. Capablanca. And that is entirely fitting an proper. No one touches Capablanca, not even Fisher. As Reti said, "Chess was his mother tongue."
Tell that to Alekhine who took out Capablanca.

but didn't capablanca also play lightningly fast? fischer had the memory, capablanca the speed, kasparov the backing...meh-i dunno who was better...however-capablanca and fischer were natural's, whereas kasparov had some pretty decent opposition to face up to. (and so could practice against relatively equal competition...)

but when it boils down to it, fisher will want to play in somalia or somewehre equally outlandish where anarchy rules. kasparov shall say, "no! we play in switzerland!" or somewhere equally conservative.

fischer-no, somalia!
kasparov-no, switzerland!
fischer-somalia!
kasparov-switzerland!

then the FBI step in and arrest fischer for being a spy, then kasparov turns to internet correspondence chess where he's timed out buy teh top player on some random site so goes insane. the end.

also-does kasparov have any of those "traits" that go alongside beign one of the top GM's? like marrying your socks or taking part iin pagan rituals before matches?...

The evidence suggests that Kasparov is the best chess player who was not a total nutcase.

Very funny post, genius, LOL.
