This could cause Jimsl to get a poor rating at Ebay if it comes back to the other guy who sold the amp... I would guess.

Ah well. If this is the worst they can do, then let them. I'm sure i will be using e-bay again after this little episode.

Misinformed by who? VAT is a tax; what did your agreement say about who pays the taxes? Did it say the cost of the item included VAT (I doubt it since the item could have been sold to buyers in non-VAT countries)? If not, the VAT is essentially a sales tax which is normally paid by the buyer at POP.

Has the guy given feedback yet? Even if he hasn't, if that's the worst he can do, I'll take the negative feedback any day.

Cor Blimey! I wanted help, not a lecture on economic theorum. If you have nothing but doom and and gloom to spew forth, then go do it on yourself. Nincompoop!

Fact of the matter is that fed-ex have paid the VAT themselves, and then tried to pass the charge onto me. The problem I have with this is that they would have known this charge would have been made in the first place, and should have informed me so, giving me the choice, rather than telling me two weeks after the goods have been received and thus giving me no choice. underhand tactics.
BTW, if you want an argument, there is always the debates forum?

Sadly the charge is nothing to to do with Fed-Ex it is a duty imposed by Customs and based on the value of the goods purchased.

For more info visit the Customs website at

www.customs.hmrc.gov.uk and look for VAT on imported goods.

Almost certainly Fed-Ex will pursue payment, although you may decide that having rec'd the goods they "can sing for it". Normally you would get a demand for payment saying duty is payable and that you should pay £xyz before they will deliver goods.

Your call as to what to do. 😉

Then why did he tick the 'recipient will pay duties and taxes' box then?
Perhaps he didn't know about these costs initially though, so I won't give him any negative feedback.
As for fed-ex, I think they should have been more up front about these cost in their initial quote, before any money changed hands and before any goods were shipped, irreversibly, across a great big ocean.
I will phone them on Monday and tell them so.

You can add messages to any feedback you give or receive.

~ Log into E-bay
~ Hit the 'Community' section
~ Go to Feedback Forum
~ Select 'Follow up to feedback left'
~ Find the feedback comment you left from the list and selcet 'Follow up'

The message you leave will appear under the original feedback you left for the Seller, so anyone reading the feedback will know how he screwed you.

After doing that I'd head for the 'Dispute Console' under My Ebay so you can raise an dispute about it. This is your best chance at getting your money back from the Seller/Ebay
