Fischer is regarded as the country's finest ever offshore sailor, having competed in 42 Sydney to Hobart races - the last in 2015 at the age of 88.
His famous boats, Ragamuffin, took Sydney to Hobart line honors twice - in 1988 and 1990 - and won the overall handicap title in 1992.
