It is merely a typo. And there aren't any keyboards that don't have a backspace key. So, it's an uncorrected typo. Why would you be trying to guess what "brigthens" means? If you read the sentence with the typo in it, one does not have to "guess" that the intended word was "brightens".
A brig then is much worse than a brig now.
