ASU argued that Obama didn't deserve an honorary degree because he had not accomplished enough. They refused to give him one.
The people on the list were those that ASU deigned degree worthy.

They actually give the things away fairly easily. Most Universities and colleges give one to every commencement speaker. But not to Obama. that was really the point of the story.

Given that Arizona State University has given the people on the list an honorary degree, but did not confer one on Obama they are implying (according to the OP) that their honorands are more accomplished than the current President.
This doesn't mean that the OP believes that Obama is less impressive than Mitt Romney's Dad, Barry Goldwater or a couple of (albeit stunning) cello-scrapers, but that he is surprised that Arizona State might imply this.

Regarding goldwater, they gave him an honoray degree in 1961 before he ran for president.
the very idea that Obama is unqualified for this fairly unimpressive award is ridiculous.
