Holden's an adolescent's idea of a cool person. Liking the book because of how it portrays a certain kind of failed youth is one thing, liking the character itself is quite another.

He was difficult to like, that was his problem, he made a mess of things and was expelled from school. I guess today we might have suspected ADHD. I still like him because of his love of children, especially his sister.
