In every service industry there are downmarket establishments and I could not recommend this ...[text shortened]... s a choice what to type. Where there is no direction it may simply be better to lead by example.
Although I think the mods you speak of are still here.
They just don't play chess.
Maybe I should say that don't try to play chess anymore.

If you believe there are better forums elsewhere, please, don't keep us in suspense and give us links, because I don't think there are...

As a test, perhaps this user should go to one of those forums and start a discussion like this one (won't even need to accuse that forum of anything, just bring up this subject)
Next, watch how quickly the thread is removed. That's not my definition of a better forum, but a more heavily moderated forum.

Sorry, I misunderstood.
Overly moderated forums are useless and get stale quicker than a loaf of yeasty bread.
Under-moderated forums become a place where only insults and swearing gets attention and gets infested with bored teenagers.
Finding the balance is quite difficult, but I think we're getting there...

Wouldn't he be happier somewhere with sanatized forums or a strictly Chess site? What would motivate a person to try to "fix" a site that down't need fixing when there are plenty of other sites that would meet their strict requeerments?

I still disagree with some points, which we have discussed in PM, and I will not bring it up here, because we know what will happen then. 😉
Originally posted by CrowleyNot long ago there were a few users working together in a thread to get the moderators 're-evaluated'. Finally they realized that one group wanted LESS moderation, while the other group wanted MORE moderation.

When you have users from "2 Sides" arguing about forum moderation you know you're somewhere between the two. Not in any way claiming a perfect balance here, but you can't make EVERYONE happy.

I'll have to disagree a little with you. I have two kids who have been on the site. I think perhpas their greatest learning has not be in chess, but rather in exposure to ideas and people. The debate and spiritual forums offer a spectrum of opinions that challenge young people if they are open. Some of the posters in these forums provide a lot of useful content and information tht goes beyond just "opinion".

Exposure can only be good. If they see poorly thought-out arguments being shot down without mercy, they might think twice about their own beliefs.
You should try posting some of your beliefs there. You'll probably realize that they're on much less solid ground that you would have believed.
