I have set up to block unrated sites, and have put the kid's favorite sites on the "acceptable" list. That is what I have done for now, but I will eventually have to get a more sophisticated software.

It's free for home use.

Yea!
Thanks Dr.!

One of the easiest ways to block sites is by using the hosts file. If you use firefox I believe that you can download lists of the common sites into a filter also. Here's some links:

You cannot beat lazy parenting.
The thought that you would put your faith into a program to protect your children is mind-boggling.

Where's the dilemma?
The way I see it, let them see porn at home, where you can see what they're up to instead of having them go out and see it other places. You cannot hide porn from them. Most of the people here watched porn without monitors and see what happened...

The internet is not safe, this we all know.
The little buggers are not allowed on if no adult is present in my onion.
I do not care about how many "disney sites" and "how much they can learn from the internet" lines they give.
If the BBC ever takes over the internet (or a version of it) then I will allow it then, and only then.
Kids today can get around those crappy site blockers, I know they have to learn about such things, but I think they should have a chance to grow up before they do.
I only recently found out what a "moose knuckle" is.
Does a 12 year old really need to know that?
They will learn what they need to know, from their pals at school.
Trust no one, they are all out to get you.
I have spare rolls of tin foil if anybody would like some.

We're in agreement. I was seven when I was told where babies come from. That doesn't mean I was ready to see videos of how they got there. Bits and pieces of knowledge, hazy or not, even complete knowledge -- these are far different from seeing graphic pictures and acts. Anything that you wouldn't purchase for a child (magazines and videos) are things they don't need to see on the internet either. IMH(aF)O

The internet is an integral part of society now and it is not going away anytime soon.
Kids are required to use the internet in elementary school computer lab and also to research reports. Not to mention the hundreds of web sites that are flashed on every commercial and cereal box.
The internet can be a good thing, if it is under control...that is my goal with a blocker.
My kids are too young to know about sex yet, so I would call it pro-active....not lazy.
