And that "third party" I mentioned above has been around for years and is more trustworthy than M$ imo.

WGA is just like the activation thingie ... it has been out for a long time. In fact even MS have their own forums now but any WGA problems are very rare. In fact with the coming out of Vista, you have not heard complaints about WGA, it has been over drivers or not working with Apple software etc.

Don't be that paranoid as to get updates from a third party site. They are not an official site and you wonder how they pay their bandwidth to host those files. Do you remember what happened to some guys who were trying to distribute MS patches by file-sharing or something similar? Microsoft shut them down.

That site must either be so new or it is it used by 5 people so it does not show up on MS radar.

that has to be a bad idea, ms doesnt collect personal info either... why would you go to a third party site to install patches for your os when ms will do it for you... at the end of the day, you have no idea who this third party are and why would they do a job that ms already does??? what would be the point? sounds a bit strange to me

ms hire the best programmers in the world to write the os, they then hire the best hackers who try to manipulate the system; when they cant, that's when the os goes on sale. eventually though a hacker somewhere will find a way; if ms kept on checking the os before it went public we'll still be living with windows 95...

i dont know what you're talking about, turn off auto updates and you'll never be troubled with it again... oh, and by the way, trust me, a virus is a lot more hassle than installing a patch of two

Gee, thanks for that! You've obviously missed the last three threads that i started this month to resolve issues with MS products that are the result of MS tampering with MY machine. I have wasted countless hours resolving issues that shouldn't be issues. I click on the little yellow shield cos i'm sick of looking at it, then it decides i'm using a cracked copy of XP which is just completely incorrect, disables a load of stuff on MY machine (that's right, MY machine, not Microsofts machine!!!) and irritates the sh;t out of me with constant pop ups. I have wasted 3 hours of my weekend jumping through the hoops and it still isn't resolved!! You are right, no OS is perfect, believe it or not i've used them all and i'm far from naive in this regard. This company is evil and incompetent and i hate them with every fiber of my being. As soon as i've read into which version of linux suits my needs i'm going to scrape this piece of sh;t operating system off my computer and never use anything by MS ever again. I don't take kindly to being controlled by money mad corporations, i no longer care that it'll take me months to get a nice working system with all the apps i need, i know once i set Linux up i'll be freed from the manipulations of money and power that has ruined what could have been a decent product. The point which i am trying to make is my machine worked perfectly this morning, now it doesn't because my OS vender has seen fit to break it! Yes, that's right, the updates are supposed to FIX things, not break them. This is not the first time this has happened to me this month, i have also had issues with Office applications being disabled as well. I don't use cracked software, yet i am suffering the punishment anyway! MS stink, simple as that...😠

okay, fair enough, it seems you've got a few issues there with ms and to be honest with you you're far from the only one... a lot of people out there do hate it this company with a passion... good luck with linux, hope it does what you're after

if you're using mozilla or another browser then its us who should despair with you... for security reasons any other browser doesnt have direct access to the kernel or the registry so it cant update your os with the code its just downloaded... i would check that site and find out what the hell is going on

I don't use Internet Explorer to surf the web or install updates. I just use automatic updates. Automatic Updates don't apply themselves "automatically" but I've set them to install just before I reboot.

That is handy as the compter playing unattended in the PlayChess engine room is not affected by any interruptions going to WindowsUpdate. In fact I cannot remember WGA or any hassles that would "force" me to use unofficial updates.

Unless your computer is pirated, post the error message you have with WGA or look it up on the net. How many articles have you seen on the BBC with users experiencing WGA problems? Certainly there are problems with Vista as you will see in articles all over but what do you expect getting an OS fresh from the bakery?

I can't believe you don't know about all the trouble WGA is causing legit users.
They had to change it's "phone home" capability after a court case. And the current court case is proceeding now.
Just because your pc [and mine, incidentally] hasn't been affected doesn't prove it's ok for everyone.
