Imposter threads are trying to dilute this nonsensical artifact. DO NOT LET THAT HAPPEN! Do not accept second-rate wannabe attempts at irrelevance. Stay tuned here for your sticky thread game updates.

I'm already stuck here by my laptop waiting on some kind of important announcement. Anyone got a beer and some nuts?

here's one:

What is the greatest chess move of all?

(note: there are several possible variations; however, the underlying principle is constant)

legal for this one; however, the illegal possibilities open entirely new possibilities.

For instance, 1. remove the opponent's king and claim the win (best executed with superior weaponry and armed back up accomplices.

quite right. works with both legal and illegal game strategies.

can there be a time when mate is not the best move? (in standard rules, standard game situations? Yes, but not ethically. care to suggest when?)

when teaching the fundamentals of chess to a younger person eager to learn, administering checkmate rather than analyzing the position together for the purpose of discovery may be demoralizing; mentoring anyone in chess is by definition a cooperative process based on mutual interest and trust.
