Malmö to Kiruna then? In a car you could get from Malmö to Stockholm in
about 8 hours, I think.
Really that long??

I get from Svinsund to Stockholm in about four and half hours. Didn't think Malmô was that far down but maybe I'm seduced by the sign to Malmô just outside the Capital 🙂

If you wanna go from Malmö to Stockholm, then either hop on a plane or prepare for a dayshift behind the wheels. Sweden may not have more than 500km width but we're like +1600km in length.

Speaking of Kiruna, I think that is a worth of seeing. Beautiful little town with coal industry and wind mills (those new ones). I liked it.

What comes to Stockholm, its really dull place. okay, you have Åhlens to shop and that one place (can't remember name) to play chess but thats about it.

Malmö is as far south as you can go in Sweden. Svinesund (I assume that's
what you meant)* is close to Växjö (which isn't too far from Stockholm, as
you say). From Stockholm you'll also find roadsigns to Oslo which is even
further from Stockholm (or about as far) as Malmö.

* There's also a Svinesund right at the border of Norway, close to Strömstad,
but given the proximity to Stockholm I'm sure that's not the Svinesund
you're thinking of, right?

Damn, people should go to Uppsala. The best of Sweden.

To me it's all the same. It's all somewhere down there in the South. 😛

Well, the hotels i've looked at online says that they are 30 mins from Coppenhagan, and walking distance from Mamlo central train station, so i guess stocklohm wouldn't be that far by train.....if i'm only going for a weekend, i'm sure Malmo would be plenty.

Interesting fact about Kiruna. They mine ore there, and they're now
discussing moving the whole town to the northwest. The reason is that
they've found an ore deposit directly underneath it which the mining
company LKAB now wants to extract. But the mountain is already cracking
up and in ten years they will have to tear down the city hall and then
successively the whole town will have to go.

So, now they're working on rerouting E10 and the railways and then
they'll start moving houses to the northwest of the town's current
location.

All I can say about that is that it must have been a Fin in charge of
laying the new E10 where it was laid only two years ago, even though
they were told already then that the town will have to be moved. 🙄😛

Malmö is way closer to Copenhagen than to Stockholm. It's just a bridge
over troubled water (granted, a long bridge but not that long). By train
to Stockholm I suppose it would take about 5-6 hours (depending on where
it stops of course), but I just picked that number from the top of my head. I
really don't have a clue how long the train takes between Malmö-Stockholm.

But, yeah, I think maybe Malmö will be enough. 🙂

Uppsala rocks! YEAH! 😵

You know why it rocks? Because it's only 40 minutes to Stockholm by car,
that's why. Heh heh... 😛

How the hell could they do that? There are surely hundreds of houses and buildings. Radisson SAS hotel alone is huge, how could they afford tearing it down? I think Paris Hilton's dad would be pretty pissed off.

It will be expensive. They estimate several billion in Swedish currency. The
fact is that they're now discussing who should pay for it. Possibly, in the end,
it will be a combined cost between the state, the mining corporation and the
owners of those buildings and landmarks that are to be saved.

Personally, I think the mining corp. should stand for the cost since they are
the ones with an interest in the underlying ore. Of course, if they have to
pay they probably won't mine there, which in turn means lost job
opportunities for the citizens of Kiruna. So you can see the dilemma.
