This is why I stopped reading Guitar Player, Guitar One, Guitar World, etc... Who actually cares if a guitar player is versatile or not? It's impressive as an intellectual exercise to hear an album that moves from bluegrass to metal to funk to polka to hip-hop to roots rock to fusion, but I hate Trey Anastasio and Phish because it doesn't hang together. Granted, true versatility (meaning one can play several styles convincingly well) reveals an in-depth understanding of music, but it's the understanding of music that makes that player great, not his wacky repertoire.

I will say that trying to be versatile has benefits to the guitar student (at many stages in their advancement), because it allows you to examine your technique and taste from many different angles and thereby nail them down, but the eventual goal is to be good. Period.

I'd have to go with either Trey Anastasio, (PHISH), or John Mclaughlin.

Thanks for all the names and posts so far.

I'm old enough to remember variety shows and music shows hosted by the likes of Liberace, Victor Borge and Glen Campbell.

I'd quite like that type of show to return on a regular basis. Is there a guitar personality that could host such a show and play an entertaining repertoire. Someone that could tell anecdotes, jokes, interview guests and jam with them live. Blues, Rock, Country, Classical.
