You could implement a scheduling system to the user settings that would permit players to set the days of week and times of day that they would like the system to shut them out and notify them when they can next connect.
For example, I might tell the system to disallow access for me between 9AM and noon and 1PM and 6PM on working days of the week. If I ever feel weak and try to connect during that time, the system will display a polite message reminding me that I should probably be doing something else instead.
Also, users cannot simply go back in the settings and modify access times. A request must be sent to the administrators in order to have access times modified. Not too many people would be eager to bother the admins.

There's nothing wrong about something being addictive.... well there isn't with a chess site.😕
the reason this site is so 'addictive' is because it is so good. i've played at other sites, but the interfaces aren't nearly as well thought out or as effective. there are also lots of nice people here too - so that doesn't help either.
no wonder some people consider this their second (and i've heard, even their first) home.

prad
ps fortunately, i am not addiicted. i only keep coming here to test my self-discipline against the obvious temptations.

it's 10 to 1 in the morning. i have an appointment with my lecturer at 11am to go through some work with him that i intended to start at 9:30pm. i still haven't started it because i have absolutely no will power and yes because i can't drag myself away from the computer. it would be a good idea if rhp could ban me for so many hours on certain nights but doesn't that make me sound like a sad junky? 😀. well i'm definately signing off now. night all

You have proved to have tons of self-discipline Prad, cause you test yourself A LOT, and you are still able to say you are not addicted! Bravo!
(*whisper* We've got a denial problem here folks!)

i have had it suggested to me that there should be some way of stopping you from playing when drunk. maybe a plug in breathalyser - then some people's ratings might go up a bit!
- even better no posting in forums drunk 🙂
when it detects above a certain level you can no longer play.
i personally could do with something stopping me from moving at certain times, but that is different - maybe a 50 move per day limit
Perhaps a "pop up screen" when you've been playing for an extended period.....mine would probably read " You've been playing for 12 days straight now !! The kids haven't been fed, your wife left 2 days ago, and you're boss called to ask when you might be dropping in" something like that might work ??!!
