The Beatles "1"

Uhmm, I think he meant something else. Wasn't it introduced in America as "Meet the Beatles"? I can't remember but I think the same albumn was put out in the UK with a slightly different title and perhaps a different song line up. Just going from the memory of the books. I'm sure I'll be corrected if wrong.

Or... Maybe he was thinking Led Zepplin.

How about groups like the Kinks? The compilations are better than individual LPs.
The Village Green Preservation Society hangs together pretty well.

I think there's a Beatles CD of their singles called 1s or number 1s [or similar] - not really an album, as such tho, is it?

Brian Eno's "Discreet Music" was pretty influential, as the first example of the ambient genre, or so I'm told.

I agree. My point was, some groups like the Kinks, came up with many singles some of which never appeared on an album. These groups are better known for their singles (including B sides) than their LPs.

I really enjoy the Golden Hour of the Kinks because all of those famous, wonderful gems are in one place.

The Kinks LPs are underrated, agreed. But, mostly we want to hear Waterloo Sunset, Where have All the Good Times Gone etc etc.

Sure, I'll never get tired of Waterloo Sunset.

Another 'interesting' LP but, again, The Small Faces are better known for their singles.

Waters without a doubt. I don't think PF would be remembered today if Barrett had continued at the helm, even if he'd kept his head together. Or they'd be remembered the same way the Thirteenth Floor Elevators are remembered. As for the Gilmour era, they sound like a band trying to sound like PF. But no doubt, Gilmour is a guitar genius and PF would not have achieved their signature sound without him.
