That's surprising, as I thought the embargo imposed by the US would have led to widespread poverty.

I suppose the issue here isn't whether or not there is widespread poverty but how far below the breadline the poorest of the poor are allowed to fall. The information will be riddled with disinformation. The left (and pro Cuba) would not want to emphasize people are generally poor. The right (and pro U.S.) would not want to emphasise that a poor country could have a better safety net for the poorest of the poor. So light the fuse and let's get tribal!!

Cuba is a funny one, they have what’s akin to a ration book from ww2 to get free food from the government so no one is starving but very controlled. Opening up a bit now though, the fall of the ussr hurt them badly as Russia was bumping in a lot of money.
