Lets just differentiate between lager and ale for a moment. Lager is piss water and there really isn't a single American beer worth drinking that I have ever come across. Ale on the other hand is a wonderful garden of delights with as many interesting and varied flavours as there are flowers in an English meadow. In fact England really do make the best ale in the world and if I ever did up and leave this crap-hole of a country it would be the only thing I might actually miss.

I'm with you on the ales, personally I like to try the guest ales they have at the pubs whenever I go, same goes for when I am getting something from the shops, I'm sure you've tried more than me though.
Any recommendations?

Has anyone noticed how much emphasis is put into commercials that demand you drink your beer really cold? I mean rocky mountain cold and practically frozen? That's because the beer is so bad that the makers know that cold will kill the flavour and you won't notice the horrible taste. I've noticed many times when I ask someone: "Do you like beer?" they answer: "Yes, but it's got to be real cold." These people are conditioned.

Beer should be served cold. Warm beer tastes less good lol.
But i agree that to cold stinks. I think beer tenders and such make it about 3-4 degrees Celcius, tho i prefer about 7 (fridge).

Depends what you're into really, here's a good list for the supermarket:

Light, summery or zesty
Summer Lightning
Badger's Champion
Bombadier Gold

Heavy. thick, malty
Rigglewelter's Black Sheep
Old Peculiar
Bombadier
Sneck Lifter (my personal favourite)
Hobgoblin (a ruby ale, but nice and deep)

Bitters, IPAs
Young's Bitter
Spitfire
London Pride (another favourite)
Old Empire

Draughts to look out for: T.E.A., Arkells 2B, Bombadier (tastes different on draught)

That should keep you going and if you find any real stonkers, let me know. The best thing about ale is that they're always changing and there's an ale for every occasion.

Straight up Samuel Adams original. I've been to many microbreweries and tried all different types of fancy beers. But Sam Adams is by far my favorite and it's not even top teer.
