I wanted to make dramas for radio.

I used to make gluey airfix models of aircraft. One day I built a yellow RAF Wessex Search and Rescue helicopter. I remember thinking that the winchman of these things had a cool job.
Which is what I've been doing since 1986, firstly with the RAF and recently in the private sector in Brunei. Shortly to retire though, and it's been every bit as cool as my 10 year old self imagined.

As an RAF man, did you get into fights with members of the Royal Navy? Or did the fact you worked on the most navy-like type of aircraft make them think twice?

Good question! No fights - but quite often disagreements on the 'best' ways of using the Sea King, our winching procedures varied quite a bit. We always saw ourselves in the RAF as the specialists of helicopter SAR, as you could spend years in the job, whereas the Navy crews would tend to alternate between SAR and other helicopter jobs, like Airborne Early Warning, trooping and anti-submarine work. That said, the Navy SAR cab at Prestwick was always busy and did a grand job.
Actually there were a few fights but they were usually beery scraps in the bars down the Falklands and relatively tame.

It was a teacher up to age 10 then a horse breeder with my own chunk of land up to 14,
followed by a dream of working somewhere in art and design but no interest in attending school regularly.

Females are allowed to inspect female bodies too, you know. It's a modern world.

Suz,

You have always been correct. What better job for a man? 😉 😛
