I try to think of words which have a decent sprinkling of vowels, and also visible words within them. For example, FACTORY has a Y which acts as a vowel, FACT, FACTOR, and no way of validly replacing one letter - in this case FACTORS is the only possibility. Then I would work out a clue for at least two of these items: 'workplace for information bits'.

I don't like clues which aren't specifically targeted, that's my monkey-brain again. So I really shouldn't get into these threads at all, I'm too rigid in my thinking!
