Also something to take into consideration is the frequency of play. I'm sure Kasparov has been playing constantly after he learned the game of chess. So it is not just a matter of time (years playing chess), but also a matter of how much chess you play/instruction received from better players. However, some people learn faster than others, but none learn all without the experience.

It's down to an individual's brain more than anything else. We're all born with particular faculties. Someone crap at chess may excell at, say, banana-painting.

This has certain element of truth..
I think anyone with a passion to do something will become good at it with practice..

Yes, but what I believe CenterNut and I are trying to say is that a person is not strictly born with what they are capable of. One of the wonders of human beings is that they can program their own brains to function better in a specific setting. This is done through repitition of an event, pattern recognition, and experience.

I agree with you on that, i started playing guitar 3 years ago and i can pretty much play almost anything i want now. Ofcourse i had to study 2-4 hours a day. But i think its the same for chess if you study enough and start playing the game at a young age then "almost anyone can become A GM or probably even world champ. (kasparov studied chess for 6 hours a day for 40 years!)

If your numbers are correct Kasparov studied chess for about 87,600 hours. That's about 3,650 days of pure studying. Just thought I'd put those numbers more in perspective for you all =).

I disagree with centernut and all those people that tell you that you can be whatever you want to be. It's cold, but that's simply not true. Nearly everything, including chess is something influenced and limited by your natural ability. On this site, I'm a 1600. Even if I studied chess 9 hours a day for the next three years, I'd only expect to become an 18, maybe 1900. Studying can only get you so far. It may be a short, or long way, depending on the activity, but everyone is limited by their natural ability. Even Kaspy. He just had a whole lot of natural ability.

Kasparov did not study chess for 6 hours a day for 40 years. He's only 41.

So what, he started playing at the age of 3 so if he's 41 like you say that makes it 38 years and I clearly recal kasparov himself saying he studied 6 hours a day in multiple interviews....
