Well, ok....not "cheating" -- but what's with folks playing in banded tournaments WELL below their true ratings?

I mean, that's like me going to my kids school and competing in the 4th grade chess tournament. What satisfaction would come from winning that?

A cheap ratings improvement?

Then join the open tournaments. The whole point of having banded tournaments is so that people of like skill level can compete with each other.

In the most recent banded tournament, I was beaten in the first round by someone who's more than 300 pts higher than me. Course he didn't get out of the first round either, because someone 500 pts higher than m ...[text shortened]... ating doesn't already tell you?

I knew there was a grudge in there somewhere.
Look at it this way. Suppose a guy graduates high school but never collected his diploma for some reason. Well these good folks are simply going back to claim what is rightfully theirs.

Come on -- if you are 6'8" you don't go back to jr. high and join a "one on one" basketball tournament.

What ...[text shortened]... similar abilities....not to be fodder for some "compensating" player pleasuring himself.

You'd think the words "post" and "previous post" would be dead giveaways.

So you only typed that in the title to get more attention? That's cheap.

You didn't like that one, huh?
Well, look at it another way. OTB tournaments are played one game at a time. You get sick, you resign one game. With the mindless system of rhp, you may wind up forfeiting 50 games and be sent to ratings hell. Now, I would be tempted to wreak my revenge on the hapless members of rhp. Yes, why not? Revenge is sweet, indeed.

I don't know if this is "well below," but my rating is around 1550 and I'm playing in a 1475-1499 banded tournament. But I'm playing people with 13xx ratings. I wasn't trying to get cheap points my rating just went up.

You started in a banded tournament that really fit your play. I'm talking about the folks who are 1800 or more who plunge down (did they go on vacation and have a bunch timed out?), and then play in the kiddie pool.

What's the point? You know it's the kiddie pool. If you are an 1800+ player, what satisfaction can you possibly get from winning a 1300 tournament?

It's like playing Chess Master's "Drunken" setting. Once you are well past that level, what satisfaction is there in playing it?

What about the people who lower their ratings on purpose, so they can enter a lower banded tournament (assume they just want a title on their "Tournament Victories"😉?

Surely, if proven, this sould result in a suspension or ban from the site?

And you could prove that they lowered their ratings with THAT intent, how?

Not to mention that they will have to keep their rating low for a month before they can get into any low tournaments....

Look at this guy: http://www.chessatwork.com/profile/playerprofile.php?uid=21274

He's at 1550 player...had been higher than 1350 for more than a year. Then his rating plunges to 800 and he's just entered the <999 banded tournament.
