Originally posted by Fat LadyIs it any worse than Leko playing the same variation against Kramnik when Kramnik had to to win to draw his World Championship match in the last round? I think Bareev, who had given up, was making a statement: Leko tacitly agreed to play for two results using this variation (a draw or a loss against Kramnik) and so would he. Why else would someone play this line when needing a win? Still, I can't explain Leko's use of this variation when Kramnik had no answer to 1...e5 which at least plays for all three results.
I can't believe Bareev gave away the match by agreeing a short draw. What a wimp.
Originally posted by NordlysThe Aronian-Shirov draw in game 5 is not terribly surprising.
And it only took four more moves to make it a draw...
Shirov came close to winning Game 4 (as White), so drawing game 5 (as Black) means that he is basing all his chances on Game 6 (again as White).
By drawing game 5, Aronian needs only a draw in Game 6 to win the match.
So, from both players' perspectives, the draw in Game 5 is not a bad result.
Match 1
Aronian Levon (ARM) 1 ½ ½ ½ ½ 3.0
Shirov Alexei (ESP) 0 ½ ½ ½ ½ 2.0
Match 2
Leko Peter (HUN) 1 ½ 1 ½ ½ 3.5
Bareev Evgeny (RUS) 0 ½ 0 ½ ½ 1.5
Match 3
Grischuk Alexander (RUS) 1 ½ ½ 0 ½ 2.5
Rublevsky Sergei (RUS) 0 ½ ½ 1 ½ 2.5
Match 4
Kamsky Gata (USA) ½ ½ 0 ½ 0 1.5
Gelfand Boris (ISR) ½ ½ 1 ½ 1 3.5
