Another couple of tips
1) take control of the center
2) Aggressive is better than passive
3) If your pieces aren't doing something, activate them
4) Sometimes sacs are needed to bash your opponents position apart
5) Pawns are good battering rams for breaking defenses
6)Bishops on diagonals and knights in central positions wiht support points.
Move your rooks. Even being mediocre player at best, like myself, I 've noticed how many players leave their rooks just sitting there not looking for the open file. A rook is the most powerful piece, IMO, for tactical play in that it's so good at pinning down and double attacking, and almost more powerful than a queen when stacked to attack. Use those rooks!

A reasonable thread, Rav. Some things I'll put it in my own words:
1. Never make a move without a reason. These can be positional, tactical, to gain some small advantage such as space or a threat, or can simply be developmental. If you're going to make that move because you can think of nothing else, then it's probably bad. Find a reason. You can so ...[text shortened]... n't deplete your castled position of protective pieces until late in the game. Link your rooks.
PLAN!

assuming you want to play better chess ...
1 do not rush,
2 take your time,
3 before you move, look to see if there are stronger attacking moves
4 before you move, look to see if you missed some threats your opponent has
5 look twice as deep in one position instead of the same depth in 14 positions

Originally posted by TRAINS44While it is true that knights cannot control as many squares from a rim position as they can from closer to the center of the board, but it can be useful as a temporary stop. For example, if you have determined that you want your white KN on f4 and e2 may be more useful for some other purpose, then Nh3 instead of Nf3 could be a very effective move.
