Since I’ve been analysing games I have heard the same questions asked time & time again:
How would the best GM’s fare against Fritz when using the 30 second top 3 matchup system?
How do you know what is humanly possible and what is cheating?
Well the short answer is that I’ve had to previously go on the word of much stronger and more experienced players who I’ve had communications with.
I decided that this was not sufficient.
A recurring “truism” is that no human player can consistently match Fritz or any other engine in many games over time and once out of database to a greater extent than averages of
Top 1 Match: 60%
Top 2 Match: 75%
Top 3 Match: 85%
and anyone who exceeds these stats is without doubt using an engine.
A minimum of 20 games against tough opposition, chosen objectively - i.e. 1 or 2 complete tournament performance(s) - all with 20+ non-book moves is often sufficient to prove or disprove a case.
So I decided to go straight to the source.
20 games with plenty of out of book moves played by 2 of the all time greats at the peak of their powers, in possibly the most famous chess match.
Fischer in particular is often praised with being one of the most tactically accurate and least blunder-prone GM’s in the history of the game. Here he is playing at the absolute height of his powers.
So, how does he do? How well does Spassky fare in comparison?
Let’s see…
The same setup was used for all 20 games:
Fritz 11 @ 30 seconds per move
Pentium 4 2.93GHz 1GB RAM
Hash Table 192MB
Database used www.chesslive.de
For obvious reasons a game is classed as “out of book” once I cannot find the position in the chesslive database prior to the 1972 Fischer-Spassky World Championship.

So, in the 1972 Fischer-Spassky match my analysis confirms that Fischer achieved results comparable to the extreme upper limit considered humanly possible/overwhelming evidence of engine use. His top 2 & top 3 matchup rates were actually a small % over this threshold.
Spassky, an incredibly strong player in his time, attained % rates around the totals that I was secretly expecting Fischer to get.
So the next time someone shouts from the rooftops that such & such a player is clearly a cheat because they exceeded some of the thresholds of

Computer aided analysis is now a part of any selfrespecting GM (it is even a question of survival), and how the chess style of chess engines has evolved too.

I'm not a chess savant but I think that the frontiers of human chess style and engine chess style are getting blurred. Rybka is a string example I think. People that know what they are talking about say it has a very human like feel of positions (plus the fact it can evaluate a gazzilion positions per second) and the previous fact I mentioned that more and more people study games with engine help. of course I'm aware that no human will get the ability of evaluation of an engine but I can see a convergence of styles taking this into account. And of course I'm bot talking about the average RHP user but I'm talking the real deal guys like Anand, Carlsen, etc...
I mean put the game of the century through your chess engine and all of the moves that Fischer got, and are considered extremely original and imaginative, just pop out in seconds.
So the next time someone shouts from the rooftops that such & such a player is clearly a cheat because they exceeded some of the thresholds of

Here I don't know if you are being facetious or not, but if any one says such a thing the poor person is just wrong. And he/she is wrong by two reasons:
1- Things should actually be done in reverse order. One should not not throw a some three numbers and define them to be our threshold. One should adopt the inverse methodology: study a good number of games (in the order of thousands) of the all time greats and see how they match up against the engines (I'd even think that this calibration should be done regularly - if the game evolves and changes why should our calibration be static?) After this is done than a reasonable and rational threshold can and should be defined.
2- The second wrong thing is that a match up rate can't be enough since we are dealing with a statistical tool to detect the cheats. So, intervals of confidence, or some other statistical indicator, must be used in order for one justify their conclusions. Of course this last step can be ignored but then one shouldn't tell anyone that one is using statistical means to detect cheats because that it isn't statistics.
And last but not least I thank you for taking the time to do and post this analysis.
By the way have you thought about doing the same for some other (more recent) championship matches?
I'm amazed the Fritz match-up was so high in the Fischer-Spassky match, current wisdom is that the 1972 Fischer would be slaughtered by the likes of Anand, Topalov etc. It looks to me like this is simply incorrect.
I just don't know what significance these figures have when trying to detect cheats on this site. At the very least they prove that >90% match-ups are possible in OTB games. I guess we have to ask ourselves how close someone isn't one of the greatest players of all time can get to emulating Fischer's statistics, taking into account the fact that they will have longer to think about their moves but will often have dozens of games on the go at once.
