pattern recognition is why i missed the knight fork at the club yesterday playing speed. calculation skills allow me to play the beautifull 6 move combination winning a pawn and and getting a great endgame last week. i am not denouncing pattern training. its all about your goals.

I also wonder why so few people want to become good blitz players? its like a tabu or something. Personally I like being strong on any time control, from G/1m to G/2h.
that said, I've just started playing standard games on FICS, and even if there have been errors, it's been fun. I'm gonna focus on blitz at some point also, but I want to first get my standard game into shape. from slower to faster is the plan. 🙂
and for those who think CTS doesn't do anything for your slow play, well, I seem to be leaving a trail of corpses so far...
how can CTS possibly improve a slow game of chess. given the time, lets say up to one minute, all of the problems on CTS can quickly be solved. they are nothing more than two or three move problems, with the majority being only one move. these would all be seen very, very quickly in a slow game if you calculate threats, checks, and captures. i honestly dont know why people torture themselves on CTS.

good point i better do at least 8000 problems today.

we can hypothesize about training as much as we like, but the bottom line is does it work.

And it's fun....
worm, i have been using this site as sort of a simul. i will get as many games going at once and then go through them very quickly. i tried it once and then gave it up. i am here only for forums. i play only at playchess because the interface is much cleaner. i would love to see you there. cheers
