I was browsing through the Chessville site and clicked on the Raymond Keene link and found myself confronted with a unique opportunity to buy a collection of the 100 best books. (http://www.keeneonchess.com/index.asp?contiene=new&id=15)
That got me thinking, would the 2 I have be among those 100 (Batsford Chess Openings and An Opening Repertoire for the Attacking Player). I must admit that I have owned another 2 books in the past (Nimzo Indian and one general opening book - can't remember the name).
Anybody go higher than 4?
From the Site:
THE PRICE IS £1500-00 INCLUDING DELIVERY COSTS TO ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD
OR 4 PAYMENTS OF £400-00 SPREAD OVER ONE YEAR.
THOSE BUYING THEIR SETS WITH A ONE OFF PAYMENT WILL BE
ACQUIRING A VALUABLE SIGNED AND NUMBERED COLLECTORS ITEM

I agree with squelchbelch...believe me, the "true chess connoisseur" don't buy keene's book and shun his commercial offers like plague...
The man has an infamous reputation as a junk writer...a bit like his friend schiller they favor quantity over quality (though he's produced a few correct books...maybe 1 in 10 is worth buying, which is not the case for schiller)
Understandably they must have a big stock to sell off...

I've never owned any Keene or Schiller books. There's only one Keene book I'd consider getting, and that's "Aron Nimzowitsch: A Reappraisal".
Originally posted by Mad RookWorld Champion Combinations isn't too bad but I think keene only helped compile games for that book... He teamed up with somebody I can't remember who. Anyway, when I see a book I'm interested in I browse the libraries first.

£1,500 for 100 Raymond Keene Chess Books!!
His 'Flank Openings'. 'Aron Nimzowitsch: A Reappraisal ' and
'How I Became a Grandmaster', (R.K's best games)are OK. .
'Learn from the Grandmasters' is also a good read.
(but it was not written by him - it was written by them).
That leaves 96. Anybody got a good word to say about the remaining 96?
If not I suggest we have a whip round and a big bonefire.

Anyone else to help us save private raymundo?
was not too bad. (is that 94 or 93)
He is always pictured wearing a bow tie and he was awarded an OBE.
So scrap the bonefire, let's just burn an effigy of him instead.
He could replace Guy Fawkes...."A penny for the the Ray?"
I've seen some rip-off's aimed at chess players in my time.
But £1,500 for a pile of chess books takes the biscuit.
Who on this God's earth is going to pay £1,500 for 100 chess books
written, or co-written by Raymond Keene?
Originally posted by greenpawn34I think it's to trap those who think 15 dollars per book is a good deal. Little do the know that they wouldn't waste a second 15 dollars on a keene book if they bought just one for 15.

Originally posted by tapestryI don't think this book collection is necessary. There are many strong correspondence chess players with modest book collections (15-30).

Having some reference material is helpful, but learning how to study chess positions and find strong moves is more imporntant, besides, with all the info available on Fritz, Chessmaster etc. why spend the money on all these books?
😲

The first edition of An Opening Repertoire for the Attacking Player (Algebraic Edition) (co-authored with IM David Levy) is one of my favorite opening books. Natually, a lot of the analysis is out of date, but it is still a good book, IMO. Keene was one of the leading authorities on the Pirc/Modern defenses, and he recommends the Pirc in the book. A reviewer at the Chessville.com website, while admitting that a lot of the analysis had some major gaps, thought that it was still a good back to have.
