Originally posted by KorchThere are quite a few 1.d4 players who feel that 1.e4 isn't the way to play for advantage anyway, regardless of what you play on your second move. I remember seeing that debate quite a few times on FICS. Personally I feel any opening that I can survive with the prospect of some initiative and a decent middle game is a good opening. There really isn't anything worse in a chess game, to me, than realizing 7 moves in that I'm already doomed to a hopeless position.
I agree that it would not be good reason, because also in Latvian gambit white can just play safe, but without opening advantage (like in Vienna).
By the way I'm a Vienna player so take this with a grain of salt since I feel my opening choice is being criticized in this thread so naturally I have to defend it. 🙂

Black had to play very accurate here and personally I take pride in finding all those wonderfull moves. Annotations would be greatly appreciated.
...If I ever become good enough and Korch is still on this site I am going to beat him with this opening.
Edit: I am sure that rubber boy will try to critique it in some way.
Originally posted by Northern LadAlways thought that line was really bad for white, though I've never tried it. Instead I play 4. fxe5 Nxe4 which isn't that hot either, and even though what I've read says its about equal, when I've had this position I always thought black better. So maybe from now on after 2... Nf6 I'll maybe head for a 4 Ns or try the positional line with g3 and a K side fianchetto. That's not as much fun as when black plays 2... Nc6 but what do you do... I'm to old to learn to play the white side all over again with something new 🙂
Talking of the Vienna, I did try a number of years ago (with mixed results) to make 1.e4 e5 2.Nc3 Nf6 3.f4 d5 4.exd5!? work. The critical line is 4...Nxd5 5.fxe5 Nxc3 6.bxc3 Qh4+ 7.Ke2, which is rather unclear.
