it will start like the ruy lopez:
1.e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 Nf6 4. c4 ?
Somewhere in the future d3 needs to be made by white as well.
think about it.
good pawn structure
control of center
and since the bishop is aleady out it does not block any pieces.

Im gonna try it in a few games, anyone want a unrated game to try this out?

any "new" line or improvement in the Ruy (the most analyzed opening of all time) will certainly not occur on move 4! Perhaps on move 12 or more likely 23!!

It looks to me like black should end up with an extra (albeit weak) pawn that can help control the center, as well as a huge lead in development. I'm no master, but I think white has squandered any hopes for advantage with this line.

somewhere in the future, if i ever get chance, im gonna play d3
think about it (or not, as in this case)
bad pawn structure
loss of a pawn
and since the bish is allready out, he might as well stay there, c ...[text shortened]... ling about it, that crazy old spanish priest never found it, SO IT MUST BE GOOD

green as ever
Is it fun to be hated by everyone? and does it hurt to have such a low self esteem that you need to laugh at people for not playing chess as good as you?

I guess that chess is the only thing you are good at in your life, since you sound like a misrable pathetic old man.

I never wanted to iprove anything. I just saw this and thought of posting it here, which appears to be a mistake.

Not necessarily - I saw an article by some Italians a couple of years ago analysing 3...a5?! (one point being that in several games White has played the 'natural' 4.d3? when 4...Na7! picks up the B).

Never caught on though 😉

There was nothing wrong with you posting this. There were a few valid comments from which we can learn ... and the other ones, well just disregard them. Don't be impressed by the statement that it is not a 'book' move. Nor isn't 4.a3, but I have won games playing it. It forces your opponent to think for himself!

edit. I didn't see Osse's posting before, but it is in the same spirit.

Yea, what mephisto said. The only way any of us learn and improve is by trying out new things, be they good or bad, there's only one way really to find out. Ignore the twits like forevergreenwith envy who wouldn't know an idea if it showed up naked in their bedroom.

That's the whole point of this forum IMO, air out an idea and get some feedback on it. Anyone whose opinion includes insults doesn't deserve your attention.

You're thinking and trying new things, which is good. Those people who looked at the opening and told you why it's good/bad by showing you the consequences are the people to respect. Then there are a bunch of pricks with attitudes, like on any forum. Anyone who says "it's never been done by smarter people than you, therefore it's wrong" are idiots.

I think the Maroczy Bind idea is solid. It's hard to take advantage of a hole unless you can open the file, and you really can't do that in the MB, if I remember correctly. I don't use it, but I respect it. A "weakness" is only a weakness if you can take advantage of it.

I just looked at the game testing this out, and this variation (4. c4) has more possibilities than I thought. This looks interesting Faith!

Thanks!

I never meant this to be any good, and I never meant for anyone to try it. I just wanted to hear about its advantages and disadvantages.
I would like for a game against you with this opening if you wish.

Hey FNM-- I think it's cool that you posted this idea. Far better to explore things on your own than to simply unthinkingly accept received wisdom. If I had more of your spirit I'd probably be a better chess player. 🙂

🙂

Its not hard to think of other openings, just picture yourself a situation on a chess board unlickly to happen and think about the varation to get there.

Im still hopiing that some heavy hitter will comment about how really bad this c4 is.

Game 691198

Paul, at the beginning of move 9, why didn't you go Qa4xBb4?

Because then Floop could bring his knight to c2 and win his queen!
