Originally posted by Faith No MoreI'm definately not a heavy hitter, but have had a look at this this evening. It is not so bad - it looks as though White should lose material, but it is more difficult than it looks - so you may have an immediate psychological edge! The main point against the opning is that I think White is forced to play BxN, when Black has a semi-open d-file and so c4 is simply a weakening move (compared to the Spanish Exchange lines).
🙂
Its not hard to think of other openings, just picture yourself a situation on a chess board unlickly to happen and think about the varation to get there.
Im still hopiing that some heavy hitter will comment about how really bad this c4 is.
A posible line that looks natural runs 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 Nf6 4.c4?! a6 5.Bxc6 bc 6.0-0 Bg4 7.Qb3 Bxf3 8.Qxf3 Qd4 9.d3 Rd8 (possibly 9...0-0-0) 10.Nc3 Qxd3 12.Qf5 Nd7, when Black may have a few issues unravelling the position but must be better (extra pawn, and c4 is very weak).
Going off the topic and being rude, but just why arent you subscribed AThousandYoung, Iv been away from rhp for a bit, but since iv come back you must be the most active person iv seen in the chess forums, clearly you have a love for the game. Im going to poke you till you become a pawn star ! *Pulls out a long poking stick 😛
I'm very new to all this opening stuff but I'll try to comment ...
Haven't most of the openings been found because they maintain the starting advantage for white? Hence there must be a myriad of potential openings for white that are good but would mean a loss of starting advantage?
So at our standard any okay alternative from the openings lines is likely to work well (for white), as you'd get familiar with the position while black has to struggle for an answer?
ps I think this type of post is excellent for us learners, it helps me understand why the various openings have developed - well done FNM
pps FNM if you want to try it out non me White or Black then I'm happy to oblige
ppps All users should subscribe - at the equivalent of 4 pints this is not a bad price - plus the tournaments in particular make it worthwhile ... better chess ... quicker opponents ... games arranged for you ... if Russ is living high on the hog then good luck to him - however I suspect he is just getting by.
