I played white, time controls were 3-0.
I've beat other engines before but I had a hard time against crafty (especially in blitz) .. I really like this game.

1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. Nc3 dxe4 4. Nxe4 Bf5 5. Ng3 Bg6
6. Nf3 Nd7 7. Bd3 e6 8. O-O Qc7 9. Re1 Be7 10. c4 Bxd3 11. Qxd3 Ngf6 12. Bg5
O-O 13. Bxf6 Nxf6 14. Ne4 Rad8 15. Nxf6+ Bxf6 16. Rad1 a6 17. Qe4 c5 18. d5
exd5 19. cxd5 Bxb2 20. Ng5 g6 21. Qh4 h5 22. Ne4 c4 23. d6 Qa5 24. g4 Bg7 25.
gxh5 Qxh5 26. Qxh5 gxh5 27. Ng3 h4 28. Nf5 Bf6 29. Re4 c3 30. Nxh4 Rfe8 31.
Rxe8+ Rxe8 32. d7 Rd8 33. Nf5 Bg5 34. Ne3 Bxe3 35. fxe3 b5 36. Kf2 Kf8 37. Ke2
Ke7 38. h4 Rxd7 39. Rxd7+ Kxd7 40. Kd3 Ke6 41. Kxc3 Kf5 42. Kb4 Kg4 43. Ka5
Kxh4 44. Kxa6 b4 45. Ka5 b3 46. axb3 Kg4 47. b4 Kf3 48. b5 f5 49. b6 Kxe3 50.
b7 f4 51. b8=Q f3 52. Qh2 f2 53. Qg2 1-0

For those interested - 40. ... Ke6 was the losing move. c2 would have given Crafty the draw. Further analysis seems to show that I never gave the engine a chance to win.

Lol thanks 🙂.

I guess if I'm gonna totally waste my life, I may as well waste it productively 😛.

Well, you wouldn't be wasting it then, would you? 😛 Seriously though, I'm in much the same predicament. I spend way too much time on chess and not enough on my studies. Now, finally, I'm starting to change the trend and only play OTB games on Thursdays and some blitz during the weekend.

Nice game too. Now, it's time for you to face Rybka or Zappa. 😉

I've beaten shredder with a time handicap before. I dont have a pc at home so I dont get to use a chess computer much. I supose if i had the latest fritz or shredder I would win even less.

Well if you can beat Crafty, it's obviously too crappy to consider using for analysis. 😛

P.S. If Bob Hyatt reads this, I'm only kidding, Bob! Crafty is a very fine engine! 🙂

I'm starting to doubt all engines in terms of analysis purposes. A 2000 level CC player will often play at the strength of a GM in a regular OTB game. GM's are reasonably often able to draw/beat engines. This would lead me to believe that engines are of very little value past the level of 2100 CC, as you are, hypothetically, stronger than the engine.

The only difference between Fritz and a 2100 rater on this site........... fritz never, ever, plays when hammered 🙂.

Out of curiosity, what version of crafty is that as your version plays several inferior moves even if it is on a palmtop. Crafty is on the likes of ICC operated by its programmers and its GM strength at blitz.

That's pretty strange. My Crafty never considers 40...Ke6, even for a fraction of a second. In fact, it finds 40...b4 instantly, which it considers a strong winning move. The difference in evaluation between 40...Ke6 and 40...b4 is so huge (5 points or more depending on which version I use) and found so quickly that I don't see how Crafty could ever play 40...Ke6.

I question whether this game was really played against Crafty... unless it's some kind of severely broken version.

I'd love to see the win after 53...Ke2

It is a tablebase win at that point (mate in a maximum of 10 moves). You can see it with any program that supports tablebases, e.g. ChessDB/Scid.

Here's one example of the longest possible line (assuming best play by White and Black playing the most "stubborn" move):

53...Ke2 54.Kb4 Ke3 55.Kb3 Ke2 56.Kc4 Ke3 57.Kd5 f1=Q 58.Qxf1 Kd2 59.Qf3 Kc1 60.Qf2 Kb1 61.Kc4 Ka1 62.Kb3 Kb1 63.Qf1# 1-0

That's actually pretty easy:53....,Ke2 54.Kb4,Ke1(what else?) 55.Kc3!,f1(Q)?? 56.Qd2# checkmate.

Without this neat little trick black can probably save the game.

19.01 - The strongest one on the market when I got it... not sure about now but I doubt they release a new version annually. My computer is NOT a dual core but it is on the strong end of single processors.

Edit to incandenza - I assure you, I was playing crafty. If you have an issue with this, I advise you to get over yourself...

"On the market"? This is a free program. The most current version is 21.5.

You must have gotten lucky and found a bug in the old version. I tried versions 19.3, 20.14, and 21.5, and none of them will touch 40...Ke6 with a ten-foot pole.

In any case, enjoy bragging about beating an ancient, buggy version of a chess program (version 19.1 was released in October 2002 according to the date stamps on the source).

EDIT: Actually, just tried compiling Crafty 19.0 and 19.1 (wouldn't have bothered, but it turned out to be surprisingly easy to do). (There's no such version as "19.01", by the way.) I can't get either of them to make any move other than 40...b4, no matter how short I set the time control.

You can tell me to get over myself, but seriously, there's something fishy about what you're telling us. Where and when did you get this alleged version of Crafty, anyway? It was current in 2002, and your profile says you're 15... did you download it when you were 10?
