I'm playing a game right now that I feel is bordering on lost. I somehow misindentified a Sicilian Dragon position. It's an opening I've played hundreds of times in various forms and the actual position is very familiar. Yet somehow I didn't notice it was in my opening knowledge and played e5 (losing a piece by force) instead of d5 or Nxd4 which would have left me fine.

Do you get carried away when clicking moves in new games, especially against lower rated players?
Do you get bored and try out a new opening just for the hell of it, or make one up on the spare of the moment?
I'm just curious to know if anyone else has these occasional blips of concentration, make massive blunders or just get a bit blasé when making their moves on RHP.

You know what mathematicians say, don't drink and derive.

Originally posted by Steelman31I don't think exy needs to have this even hinted at. He plays some rather illogical moves but he's spanked me across the board in every game except two. One I drew, and only because of a simple piece exchange not done in the proper order, a mistake anyone below 2200 could make. I have only beaten him once and that's because he was half asleep and making some really rushed moves from an internet cafe.
You should be more careful where you tread. A 1800 rated player falling for fool's mate in the occasional game is one way to have cheating accusations fling at you. If you really don't cheat, you shouldn't of made these games public. Two bits of advice suffice to say.
I actually enjoy playing against his off the wall style, so many games I play here on rhp are so book and database that it's almost boring. I can understand why after playing the same game a thousand times you have to step back and go, well this time I'm going to do this instead...So what if he loses because of some off the wall variation occassionally, at least when I played him his games were'nt dull.

The hard bit I find in the opening is recognising a position. The way my mind works I know many openings only by the moves not by the intermediate positions (at times I've got confused looking at the position after 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4).
I tend not to make a huge number of mistakes against lower rated players but when I do I go all out. I've stepped into mates in 1 in a clearly won game and the like.
In the Lost Bobby's tournament I opened with the Blackmar-Diemer Gambit against two 2200+ players just for fun.
So I guess we are blunderbrothers.
