Hello! Sorry if this is a question answered elsewhere on the site, but what is the number used for your Opponent's rating when calculating win expectancy, his rating when you start, or when th game ends before calculation of your match?

RahimK is technically correct however he answered a different question to the one asked. Also in OTB chess your rating at the start of the game will be the same as your rating at the end.

Simuls? 😕 or are they all just added up at the end?

I doubt simuls are ever rated.

Correct, simuls are never rated.

Also OTB ratings are typically calculated in cycles, normally 4 per year. The list is then released for use in seeding and invites to upcoming tournaments.

Ok, I haven't joined yet, but I reckon I will, as it's a great site, and I'd like to play in tournies with people crap like me. But first:

Question:

could you define OTB and simul, please?!

OTB is over the board chess. Playing against a person face to face.

A simul is when a strong player plays a number of weaker (comparitively) players at the same time. I played against Nigel Short recently in a 30 player simul.

Ok, that makes sense, thanks.

But I was asking about ratings on this site. In a normal game, say? Then which is the number that matters?

Thats true for FIDE or USCF, national and international organizations
but our local club has its own ratings, based on USCF calculations and
they update ratings after each tourny.

Wow, 4 times per year? And here we were complaing about our rating been a several weeks late. Our CFC ones are suppose to do be done every 3 weeks but they are always late. O well, better then 4 times a year 🙂

On this site only RHP ratings matter.

Well I guess I'm just a hack. I've always just played for fun and have never had any kind of idea at what I may be rated at. I think way too many people on here put too much importance on what the ratings may be and are so preocupied with it that they are not having any fun.
