Well I guess I'm just a hack. I've always just played for fun and have never had any kind of idea at what I may be rated at. I think way too many people on here put too much importance on what the ratings may be and are so preocupied with it that they are not having any fun.

OTB is over the board chess. Playing against a person face to face.
A simul is when a strong player plays a number of weaker (comparitively) players at the same time. I played against Nigel Short recently in a 30 player simul.
Did you find it interesting, I mean he will obviously just kill me (or can it be difficult for them to play that many weaker players?)
Originally posted by stevetoddIn a tour of New Zealand (5 venues) Nigel Short scored 132 wins, 12 draws and 2 losses for a total score of 138/146 (94.5😵. This was against widely varying skill levels (The top board at the one I played at is 2118 FIDE).

I found it very interesting and well worth the entry fee I paid for it.
Originally posted by XanthosNZThanks, he's not as good as Short but that will not make any difference to me. I have no otb rating (first season) yet but I don't think the chess world is exactly worried about my entry into their arena. I'm probably about 1550 in standard play so I will get killed but I think I would find it interesting and something better to do than prop up the bar that night (it's only £10 anyway). One of my concerns is that (at least amongst the adults) I'm by far the biggest dumbo to put himself up for this, ie. everyone else is 1900 plus and gives him some sort of game, maybe public humiliation is what I need to get some serious studying done.

Edit: actually that 1550 is based on yahoo, I don't know if yahoo uses FIDE or elo, does anyone know?
Originally posted by XanthosNZNo lol sorry I didn't but I knew from a glance a while ago that you had mentioned a simul, so I tracked it down, but I take your point, I will read it now
Did you even read this thread?
Edit: Well I have read it but not sure what point you were making I thought when I read your post the answer must have been in the thread. Maybe it is and I am being dumb? Unless you mean that yahoo obviously uses ratings unique to their site, which I had figured but thought perhaps it was BASED on something, but then again thinking about it I don't suppose it could be linked in anyway to another rating system and is therefore more or less meaningless except when compared to other yahoo ratings.
Edit2: Ahh think I know what you mean is it that I was mistakingly thinking elo and FIDE was 2 different things (to explain I have absolutely no experience of chess ratings).

Problems with Yahoo: 1.cheaters, 2. cheaters
3. you could play all your games in beginners rooms get a rating of say 1700 and then go to advance and people would think you got that 1700 rating from the advance rooms.
That's just dumb, they should have seperate ratings for the different rooms or something else like that.
Originally posted by RahimKYeah I'm not exactly happy with yahoo but it fills a gap when I feel like a live game. I can't explain why I can't get a decent rating there, but I think my BCF rating will be about 105 to 110 (based on my games with 100 and 120 players at our club). But I don't suppose BCF means anything to anyone outside the UK (why on earth we can't all use the same system, is there a reason why not?)
Stop playing on yahoo. Only cheaters play there. I'm suprised you yahoo rating is so low yet your rating on here is pretty high.

Edit I found a conversion formulae (BCF to FIDE is BCF * 5 +1250) which equates to about 1787 (which really suprises me because of my yahoo experiences)

I hear this all the time. Are they using engines? What if you only played a 3-5 min games? will this deter cheating?
I played there recently, and quit one game, because i jumped in and then saw it was no timer, and lost a close game to a 1800+, who hung a piece, and i missed it. All others i won (22 games)
If theres cheating, it must be in the upper levels.
Originally posted by GrandmousterOh he is absoltely correct believe me, I can sometimes tell and have managed to get them to confess now and again. I do not like games under 30 mins anyway. The tell tale sign for me is when they are taking an equal amount of time to move, whether there is an obvious move or I have given them a very tricky decision to make.
How do you find cheaters on yahoo?

Originally posted by GrandmousterIf you go into the advanced room you will find the cheaters. Firstly all the people with the red besides them, cheaters, the ones with the higher yellow or whatever the next one are cheaters. Yes its mostly at the upper level but since yahoo's rating is messed up, its easier to get points in the beginner rooms. So people use thier fritz or whatever in beginner to get 1600 points and then go to intermediete and then finally to advanced.

No 3-5 min games don't deter cheating. Most of them have programmed their fritz into yahoo meaning the moves are made by the computer instead of by the person. So instead of a person copying moves from fritz into yahoo and then from yahoo back to fritz which takes time, the computer does it all for them so a 1 min game on yahoo could be played exactly by fritz in 1 min. 1 to 1 ratio.
All those people who have closed games which you can't watch and its verse someone really good vs a bad player, cheaters. Some of them are so desperate to be the top dog there, that they program it so that fritz starts a game by itself and let it run through the night while they sleep.
ICC, playchess etc...are much better. I stopped playing on yahoo completely.

Playing on Yahoo did not do much for my game. You play great and then you get defeated by some patzer who is using a program. You get angry and play him again and keep losing and it just wrecks your day. Then after some of them have the nerve to say they are using a program and stuff like you suck and such.
Originally posted by RahimKyes thats yahoo alright you have reminded me why I subscribed to rhp mainly to get away from all that crappy 'you suck' etc from some kid that probably can't even play
