And you are the sole judge of whether someone deserves payment for their work or whether it deserves to be pirated?
As was said before, if you don't like an author don't buy their books.
It's still stealing.

I agree with you competely and I would never download stuff by authors who are trying to make a living. (I have more than enough books on my shelf)
But I do not agree about nimzowitsch writing for the money. It would explain the hypermodern idees in his books a lot better if he wrote to share his idees with us.
And I only download stuff drom authors who are filthy rich or long dead.
FTR, I'm not in any camp, just on the side of the little guy. I think software companies charge obscene amounts of money for their software. I've also found vastly differing prices between pricing in the USA/Canada and the rest of the world. Three years ago I was looking for GameBoys and games for my kids to keep them quiet on a long journey. They were half the price online in the US versus anywhere else in the English-speaking world including the UK, Singapore and Hong Kong. And, Amazon.com does not ship electronic goods or games outside of the USA. Talk about predatory pricing. My solution was to ship to the hotel room of a friend of mine on a course in the States, and get her to bring the purchase back for us. I won't get on to how incompetent the hotel was in delivering the package to the recipient ...

just download them right of the net 😀
I have lots of other chess ebooks, I downloaded them at kazaa. All you have to do is search for chess under ebooks and leave the machine searching for an hour.
P.S.: guys spare your breath,I don't give a damn about writing rights or whatever, free stuff is best.

sure, its theft. I never said otherwise. But of course that does not mean its wrong in every case. So your going to tell us you never download anything?! Because you want bill gates to get his "rightfully" earned money?
I never download anything from geocities, but I've downloaded well over 1000 chess databases, including several designed to accompany books that I do not have. I've alos downloaded many ebooks.
However, I would not recommend that someone skip buying a book because some thief with a geocities site has put the text online. I've spent too much time cleaning malware off my children's systems because they have no such qualms. When I am confident of the accuracy of the text, and the security of the site, I might recommend looking at an online version as part of the decision to purchase.

Why not rob the local bookshop while you're at it? Hey, it's free. 😠
Robbing is a thing, downloading something on the net is a completely different issue.
Ha! I just downloaded "Art of attack in chess" by V.Vukovic, you can continue babbling as you want!😛

Theft, yes.
Originally posted by RavelloIt does not please me, it never does.
Ok,call me a thief if it pleases you............
LOTC uses "art belongs to no-one" as an excuse for theft, what's yours?
Maybe you think the rightful owners can afford it so then it's ok, in the same way the burglar thinks you can afford to buy another computer.
Originally posted by RavelloYou know, I used to quite enjoy your posts, but you show yourself now as a selfish, cheap little smeghead (yeah, that kind of fits). Rather than saying "nah, nah, nah, I dunnit and what're you gonna do about it!" justify your actions. We can debate this issue.

Do you have any moral justifications? If not you're no more than a common thief. Some common justifications for crime in general:
1. I didn't put it there, I just took it. Like knowing that you're the recipient of stolen goods but taking them anyway.
2. It's a victimless crime - no one get's hurt and it's not like I'm robbing a store. Like embezzlement or white collar crime. Someone pays in the end.
3. They can't catch me. The way I see it, that just about fits your attitude .
I've said it already but I personally don't have any hard and fast rules. It's one thing to copy grossly overpriced software - that's almost a game. But it's another thing to take from the mouth of a chess player/writer who writes for the love of the game and to make money to keep him going.
Now, justify yourself.

If he wanted to share "his system" then he should have made provision for it to be freely legally available. If he did not then someone owns the rights, whether they inherited them, bought them or found them in a gutter and are now trying to sell them at a 50 000 000% profit is not the point. DO NOT DOWNLOAD COPYRIGHT material, it is theft.
LOTC has simply come up with another excuse for theft, call it art and no-one owns it.
Free downloading RULES!
